Living in Lakeland where the corporate office resides - can't imagine what this city/county/state would be like w/o Publix.. I worked @ the corporate office for five years before making the pharma industry my career.. Both my parents worked @ Publix - my mom for over 26 years in the accounts receiveable dept.. Even in my later years - I have thought of applying for a position (even as a bag boy) so I could purchase more stock!!!!!

"Publix...where shopping is a pleasure" You're Goddamn right.
I live in Cali and have to deal with Safeway or Savemart...

I remember it was a big deal when Mr Jenkins made his regular stop in at our little Publix back when Clermont was a hamlet and not a bedroom community

When I was stationed in Columbus, every trip to Publix would result in me being gone for 2 hours even if I went just for bread.

Other things that make Publix awesome:
-They have Redbox kiosks now
-Their Presto! ATM machine only charges $1
-Recycling stations
-Lots of registers always open no matter what time of the day so there's never a long line

Ingles is the closest thing to publix that I have where I live. More expensive and not nearly as good.

I work at Publix right now while trying to find a good IT job and working through school. They are great at working with a school schedule. Working there kinda sucks because we have to suck up to you customers who are now incredibly entitled to the service we provide.

the produce at Publix is horrible...most fruits don't ripen correctly...and there prepared food is a notch below a diner...otherwise satisfactory

I shop almost exclusively at Whole Foods. But then again, I'm a greenie that believes in organic foods, recycling, sustainable farming, etc. I pay out the wazoo for it as well.
But when I go back home and visit my family in Daytona Beach, I make a bee-line to Publix and grab a sub and some sweet tea.

Almost all prepared foods at the Publix Deli are frozen. Anything you get in the deli hot case that is not chicken or pork is frozen (popcorn chicken is frozen). Considering that, it's pretty decent food. They are supposed to rotate food out often and stir it so that it stays hot/fresh. If they don't you get subpar food. Tenders, Rotis, and fried chicken are never frozen and they are really good. The pork comes mostly cooked and seasoned but its not frozen either.
The sub meat gets thrown out at the end of the day, as well as the cheese. Only pickles from the sub shop are kept over, all other vegetables are thrown out and fresh each day.

Trader Joe's rocks for some things. Prices on almonds and walnuts are better than most places. I got five organic kiwi's there, for the price of two non organics at Publix, so they have their niche.
Whole Foods has a much better produce section with a lot more choices than Publix.
But there is a Publix everywhere near us, and it has its own set of things they are good at as well. But even they vary depending on the area they are in. The one's near the better area's will have things the lesser area's don't.

I'm moving to LA soon. And since I like Publix, anything close to that out there ? Vons ?
FWIW: these days, to save money, I do most of my shopping at Aldi's and Wal-Mart. I can get six-packs of decent beer at both for as under $5.

To add to the higher end grocery debate, I like Fresh Market. Higher end everything and the prices are commensurate.
Petty's in Longwood is another good one. The building itself should be imploded and rebuilt. I do not enjoy going there, but they have high quality products.

Hey Dream, you might want to forget about saving money when you go shopping out here in L.A.
Vons is pretty decent...as is Ralph's. But neither compare to Publix. Not even close IMO. There are some pretty awesome Whole Foods though...there's one in Encino that is as big as a small shopping mall.

Gotcha, and it stands in my favor that I abide by my own advice: I don't eat a lot.

Dream vons is decent. It's the same as Safeway. Sprouts is pretty good if you are near one

My Publix has the worlds oldest women in it, along with their 90 year old husbands hanging on to the side of the cart blocking the aisles....
