Manti Te'o
Brent opens with this comment right before the game begins:
camera on Te'o: "One of the most heralded players in college football history."
Anyone remember hearing that? As the comment was coming out of his mouth I thought he was going to say: "One of the most heralded players in college football this year." Then he comes out with "in college football history". WTF?
That guy is average at best. Don't tell me he just had a bad night tackling, he was so over matched he was out of the play all night.

I think he was referring to all of the indivisual awards Manti got this year. Either 8 or 9 which makes him one of the most heralded in history from that point of view.

I think he was right in terms of winning all of those awards, deserved or not.

He stood out on a team which hadn't played great defense for decades...in the SEC he would be just another dude....the top SEC teams each have 3-4 better defensive players.

He was certainly heralded. He just didn't deserve all the heraldry.
Best line I've seen about him so far - "Loosely translated, in English Manti Te'o means Missed Tackles."

I guess the next question is these award committees. Collectively they made this average player one of the most heralded players in college football history. That's a large statement.
I think this little tidbit needs to be exposed, even ridiculed for what it is. There were no other linebackers in the nation who were deserving of a couple of these awards?

There are LBs all over the SEC that make tackles he misses look routine. I told the guys I was watching with last night that Lacy gets dropped on that 1st TD run by an SEC linebacker. Teo completely whiffed and was flailing at him from the ground.

One award was best defensive player, another was best collegiate player, so yes, there were others more deserving.

Agree Tomis, in the SEC, he would be just another dude with a name nobody could get right.

He looked completely out of his league in that game. On one of Lacy's runs up the middle he was unblocked and completely whiffed on Lacy. How can someone so highly regarded completely whiff on a 220 lb running back when he is unblocked and has a clear run to the running back. Did he make any tackles in the game?
Also from what I saw ND will fit perfectly in with their future ACC competition.

I would not be drafting him in the first round.

Draft status just went from low first round to mid third....maybe. His only hope was if Gene Smith had been retained by the Jags. Then again Te'o goes to a school with more than 2000 kids so even Smith would have passed.

It's hard to judge him in hypotheticals, though. By most measures, ND played a tough schedule and he had a decent season. This will likely impact non-SEC players going forward for a while, though.

Since the SEC's reign of terror started, 4 of the last 6 Heisman winners came from the SEC. In the 20 years prior to that just one SEC player won it.

Chuck Bednarik wants his trophy back. Walter Camp says "WTF?" And now we learn that the Maxwell Award won by Manti Te'o wasn't the award given by the Maxwell Football Club, it was the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Award. http://www.tcul.coop/The_Dora_Maxwell_Award.html

As it turned out, ND played a tough schedule in name only. It was good when they lined it up but the better teams turned out to be not very good, for whatever reason.
I agree, going forward you had better be really good to get these awards and not just have a single lucky aspect to your game (deflected passes).
