WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing an end-of-the-month deadline, the Obama administration is calling gun owner groups, victims' organizations and representatives from the video-game industry to the White House this week for discussions on potential policy proposals for curbing gun violence.

President Barack Obama has ordered an administration-wide task force to send him proposals by the end of January. The group, led by Vice President Joe Biden, was formed in response to last month's horrific massacre of 20 children and six adults at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

Biden will meet Wednesday with gun violence victims' groups and gun safety organizations, a White House official said. On Thursday, he will hold talks with gun ownership groups, as well as advocates for sportsmen. The vice president also plans to meet this week with representatives from the entertainment and video-game industries. The official was not authorized to discuss the meetings before they were publicly announced and thus spoke on condition of anonymity.

Obama has called the Dec. 14 shooting in Newtown the worst moment of his presidency. It catapulted gun control to the top of his priority list for the first time in his presidency and also led some pro-gun lawmakers on Capitol Hill to express a willingness to consider new measures.

But less than a month after the school shooting, gun control already has taken a backseat in Washington to economic issues. The president and lawmakers were consumed at year's end by efforts to avert the combination of spending cuts and tax hikes known as the "fiscal cliff." And Congress will face another set of equally pressing economic deadlines in March.

Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the Senate, said the next round of fiscal deadlines will occupy the attention of Congress and push off the consideration of gun legislation for at least three months.

"There will be plenty of time to take a look at their recommendations once they come forward," McConnell said of Biden's upcoming proposals during an interview Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

996 is stepping his stance for confiscation. The President has no authority to do this and this is proof liberal are not to be trusted with this issue.

We should stop saying executive order and start saying what it is -- proclamation, decree. He has abandoned any pretense of using executive orders to carry out laws passed by Congress.

you guys might have a bit more credibility with that kind of stuff if you had complained about executive orders by previous presidents.

I can't remember a lot of instances of prior Presidents using executive orders in lieu of even engaging the legislature. But really, I find the entire premise that incremental blindness somehow bars people from finally saying "holy crap, the water in this pot has come to a boil!" Somewhere between comical and contemptible. If it were the case, we might as well give up on the civil society.

it didn't need defending because no one made it an issue. just a normal part of being president until 2009 when all of a sudden an executive order meant we'd become a dictatorship.

You only have to look back to our previous executive for the examples you seek.

Executive orders are one thing and executive orders that have constitutional issues are quite another. Cute little game you play, but every President gives executive orders but not for gun control.

Oh aye? What particular executive orders do you have in mind that Bush issued as an explicit bypass of the legislative process? I.E. Obama's now old hat "Congress won't do what I want so I'll do it myself" royal proclamations?

...including gun commerce.

That's false. I've been discussing the threat and trend of issued presidential Executive Orders, specifically in the context of a nascent police state, since I registered this account. Others have referenced them too.

You probably don't read or retain the memory of stuff you don't like, that's all.
