i find it difficult to believe there is a god. I find it more difficult to believe that if there was a god that intervened in the lives of humans, he would care about the winner of a college football game. And I find it most impossible to believe that if he did care about the winner of a college football game, he would pick little Nicky Satan over anyone, even Georgia!

Ha! Pretty funny. With all of your suppositions it does appear that if you did believe in God you certainly would think this entity would be male.
Lastly, I think it's just an expression. I don't think God (whatever gender you choose to attribute) intervened.
