Default Where does the ND hate come from?

Is it their fans arrogance?

Is it the medias obsession with them?

Just curious why ND is one of those teams if you're not a fan of them you hate them...

Thoughts?

media and referee favorites for many years in the 60's, 70's and 80's. since holtz left and they were pretty much a non-story for the last 20 years, their luck has changed to actually feeling sorry for them when weis was coach. the media is even more powerful now so get ready for the nd lovefest from now on. we will be sick of osu and nd next year

Lou Holtz
Overrated, they think they are great and have done nothing in 25 years.
Play soft, wimpy teams.
Play in the ACC, yet won't join.

I just hate them!

Simple. Join a conference already! Why does ND think their s*#t doesn't stink? Why should NBC reward them with their own station? A lot of power & money in that school & alums...hence, media fest. Just annoying.

lucia nailed it....if you were around during the 60's, 70's and part of the 80's--you would know why. The levels of attention and 'entitlement' the media was pouring on the Lamers went off the charts. As much as we all joke about the Gumps sense of entitlement, that at least falls among their own fans more than anything else. With the ND sense of supreme existence--it was across the board with the media, sports figures, etc--EVERYONE was always putting ND at the top of every poll pre-season, mid season, you name it season. Football season was only affirmed when the words 'Fightin Irish' was included. Otherwise, football season meant nothing. Screw Notre Dame.

Just being the QB at ND was an automatic front runner position as Heisman back during those days. Even dragged into the 90s with that bogus BS when Ron Powlus was "going to win 4 Heismans while at ND" according to Beano Cook--just because he was QB at Notre Dame. Screw Notre Dame.

For you younger folks...just so you know....back during those earlier days, that chit got old and got old quick.

Screw Notre Dame. Their arrogance knows no bounds--"too important to join a conference"---Knute and Four Horsemen and all that other ancient chit (which was fine and respectable BACK THEN) kept getting shoved down our throats on a perpetual basis.

Screw Notre Dame. The younger posters in here have NO IDEA at all what could likely happen IF the Irish win the NC this year. We won't hear the end of it, and as lucia pointed out--the lovefest will be unlike anything most of today's younger fans haven't seen before. I know I have been grateful for the past 20 or so years having ND being basically irrelevant. We haven't had to hear about the Irish like we used to. They have been replaced by the media to a certain extent with tOSU but even then it isn't close to what will happen if the Gumps drop the ball here Monday night.

As a fan of not just the SEC, but as a fan of college football in general--if you want to maintain even a remote sense of level field coverage by the media, you better pray that Alabama demolishes those gold domers and I mean whips them back to the level of pond scum. Notre Dame, just by being IN the game this year has raised their level of attention and hype to pretty lofty levels. The only way to put it back to sane levels is to have them absolutely destroyed beyond their worst nightmares.

Screw Notre Dame.

Screw Notre Dame.

Screw Notre Dame.

From childhood and Paul Hornung's time. Same thing with the Yankees.
Kept the arrogance even when not justified for years. And the media love affair.
I don't want Bama to win a 3rd NC in 4 years, but ABND.
Also, they want to sound so Catholic, but have strayed as a university far from those beliefs.
I could go on, but will quit. Touchdown Jesus, my a$$.

Most of society are natural born haters. They look for a reason to hate something. It's the way their brains developed

If you hate the Yankees, then you will probably hate Notre Dame... unless you're Catholic. I'm a Southerner and a hatred for Notre Dame (and anything northern) was instilled in me at an early age. It always amazed me that there were some Catholic Southerners who actually liked Notre Dame.

I grew up in Miami in the 80's and was sadly a scUM fan. I'm no longer a cane fan(duh) but I still hate Notre Dame. That will never change.

Mel "BigHair" Kyper is a self described huge fan of the Irish. Is that enough to make people hate them? I think more likely it's the same type hatred as Duke basketball receives except that Duke is far more accomplished in basketball.

You are correct--I did forget to mention their 'luck of the Irish'. I won't take the time to look it up, but based on memory (biased I'm sure), I recall ND winning more 'last second games' or kicking the winning FG as time expires more than ANY team in sports history--any sport. It may just be a faulty memory, but I swear they seem to have won more games in the final few seconds than any team on this planet.

NO ONE is that lucky. No one.

ND did one thing back in those days that I sort of admired. It finished one year with a 7-3 record and turned down a bowl invitation because it felt that it didn't deserve it.

That was back when there were four major bowls and a couple of minor ones, compared to the ridiculous slew of bowls today. A bowl invite back then was a true reward. Of course it can also be said that ND would have gotten a bowl invite that it didn't deserve, simply because it was ND, if it had been willing to accept one. I think maybe ND also felt that no bowl deserved the Irish's presence, since they had less than a stellar year compared to their glorious past. "You'll just have to do without us this year."

The factors mentioned are important, but are not all.

I don't hate Notre Dame and I actually root for them against some teams, like Kiffin's USC, or Ohio State, but since the days of Knute Rockne, they have been the darlings of the media and in the old days, their Subway Alumni used to drive one crazy with the love for a place they know absolutely nothing about.

Notre Dame is a heavily endowed institution, which is typical of Wealthy Private Universities like Duke, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Yale, Harvard, and even schools like Miami.

Despite the fact that they are termed "private," they receive very nearly as much public money as the so called "public" institutions, yet are allowed to charge insane prices to students which gives them incredible advantages in many ways over less well financed public institutions like Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon, Berkeley, North Carolina and Florida, among many others.

This, in and of itself is a major reason to dislike them.

I have many friends both on faculties and who are/have been students at these institutions, but I tend to root against them in sports, unless they are playing teams against which I have greater negative bias.

The kids who are offspring of the Elite almost always attend such institutions, and, as a result, gain monstrous advantages throughout their lives over our children who attend primarily public institutions.

This alone is a good reason to "hate" them, although hate is certainly too strong an emotion, and dislike fits much better.

So its safe to say most hate ND because the media hype. They dont actually hate ND just the medias love for them.

Same can be said for tebow.
People dont hate tim tebow the person.
They hate tim tebow because the media loves him.

Even the most famous quote in college football history comes from ND: "Win one for the Gipper." Is there any quote comparable? (I'm not sure that "Wait till next year" is an old saying exclusive to UF.)
