Bowl Officiating: Anti-SEC Bias?
After watching LSU and USC get screwed by some calls and non-calls, I wonder how much anti SEC bias there is among officiating. The Michigan 4th down conversion gift was a prime example. The head ref barely looked at the measurement, after what I thought was a generous UM spot. SOS pointed at the gap between the nose and the marker, they "remeasured" with what looked like a few loose links and still signalled first down. This morining's paper had SOS quotes with another official that acknowledged that it was NOT a first down.
I hope we don't have ACC officials tonight!

What did you see the LSU game? I didn't notice anything there. The USC game had, no doubt, THE example of terrible officiating. On the other hand, the next offensive play they were likely forced to give USC a TD when it certainly could have been overruled.
I don't like to play the victim. Almost every fan of every team thinks the refs are against his team or conference.

I'll buy the USC game conspiracy, but LSU got its bottom spanked. They deserved to lose that game by more than 1 point. That was an embarrassing effort by them.

Can you blame them? Everybody is tired of seeing the SEC scorch the earth the last several years, except of course fans of SEC teams.

Yes, I watched the LSU game and they deserved to lose. However, whenever there were close calls, they all seemed to favor Climpson.

Yes, I can blame an official for failing to do his job.

Except on the last drive when the LSU defender mugged the receiver but no PI. Set up, what, 4th and 16.

If we do then I will draw the conclusion that there is a bias against the SEC. Although the Big 10 refs are just as bad. Lets make sure that what has happened so far this bowl season dooesn't happen to us and if it does, lets call them out on it. If enough of us complain then someone will have to listen. I'm sure there will be enough eyes watching including the Athletic Dept.

I try to stay out of anti-ref talk, but last night's USC/Mich game blew my mind...with a hugely generous spot and the chains not even pulled tight, the ball never made it to the first down marker and the white-hatted ref (umpire?) signalled first down...despite everyone right there, that wing-nut re-signalled first down a couple of times for emphasis. I was flumoxxed and amazed at his absolute dedication to ensuring a Michigan victory, but the unmitigated gall to do it with all eyes and cameras directly focused on his mission really blew me away. While the imbalance was erased moments later with Jadeveon Clowney playing the role of karma on the Michigan running back, the precedent set by that ref leaves an unsettling feeling about any such thing as an objective official.

There have to be NCAA officials rather than officials associated with conferences that benefit monetarily if their teams win. It's absurd and gave rise to the biggest fixed game cheat fest ever in the history of all sports....The Swindle in the Swamp.
Just ask yourself what would have happened to the ACC automatic BCS bid for their conference champ had REFsu lost to UF in 2003? It's all right there!!! Possible loss of ACC BCS auto bid had they lost because no ACC champ had finished ranked high enough to keep qualifying for the automatic bid if they had lost that game.
I'd still like to drive to Jack Childress's house and crap all over his front door stoop.

For those that may interested, and I would think that would many from reading this thread, please take a moment to check out the opening post of the Sugar Bowl game thread which is stickied at the top of the page. We have a info posted there.
Near the top of the OP on the Sugar Bowl game we listed what conference officials would be working the game. That would be the Big 10. But wait, there's more. Look a little further down on that opening post and you see we listed all the assignments of the conference officials and what Bowl Games they are working. And you may have noticed every Bowl Game thread has the conference officials that are working that game.
Carry on.....

Did you watch us play them in Tallacrappy this year? Same thing happened except for the fact that the Gators had far too many weapons/answers for FSU.
That game should have been 42-10 easily.

I dunno but the Big 12 head ref in the Georgia game was nobody to mess with.
Meanwhile, what first down ?
Quote:
TAMPA, Fla. -- Shortly before the carnage came two conversations. After Michigan's Floyd Simmons gained not-quite-four yards on a fourth-and-four play in the fourth quarter of the Outback Bowl, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier watched as referee Jeff Maconaghy awarded a first down in spite of the fact that the nose of the ball didn't reach the first-down marker. Spurrier asked a nearby official for an explanation. Spurrier's memory of the exchange goes like this:
Spurrier: "You know the ball did not touch the first-down marker?"
Official: "I know it didn't."
Spurrier: "Well, why'd he give it to 'em?"
Official: "I don't know."
"That's what he said. We felt like he was pointing the wrong way. I asked if he meant that way," Spurrier said later, pointing in opposite directions. "He wasn't going to change his mind." http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/col...#ixzz2GrJULe2v
