Default Grades v KSU

Thought I would try something different to start. Rather then give my impressions I am going with a running diary (credit to the sportsguy for the idea). Thoughts are listed in order of occurrence:

Horrible first 2 calls by the ref. I hope this is not a sign of what's to come but bet it is.

Props to KSU, I like that they dont restrict their female cheerleaders by weight. They had one pushing 175 lbs, Big girls should have every right to cheer as well.

WY showing great hands defensively.

Team boxing out very nicely.

Prather just hanging in the air and then decides to shoot the floater. So damn athletic.

Rosario forcing offense. I fear he thinks he needs to carry us

Young gets grabbed with two hands and the wrong ref makes the call. RIght call but how did the guy under the hoop miss it.

Prather fumbles pass from ref and he doesnt blow the whistle. Moronic call by the ref

Billy - way too much KB at the point should have been SW. Would have loved to see the big lineup with Prather at the 2 as this was an ideal game for it
2nd half:
Fran F - calling us FSU and KSU KU not his shining moment

Rosario late trailing the shooter (replay showed clear moving pick not called) pattern all game

SW showing much better at running the high pick and roll then KB

Rosario decides he is chucking a 3 before even receiving the ball or reading def. Gets blocked easily.

KB absolute failure to read the d equals an easy block. He needs his floater v a shot blocker not those turn your back on the defender layups. Very weak.

Onto the grades...

KB, 3: Another stinker for Kenny. His on ball def has been below avg for him past 2 games suffering along with his offense. Misread the d all night on the high pick and roll. Pressure handling the ball obviously effects him.

Rosario, 1: Bad decision after bad decision offensively. Defensively slow trailing every screen. Tried to be the man but rightfully got benched. Just a horrible game.

Frazier II, 4: Made his 1 good look from deep. Competed but seemed hesitant to put it on the floor tonight.

Murphy, 5: Way too weak on the glass. Offensively, guards failed at even looking at him on the pick and roll way too often. Def looked slow

Prather, 4: PLayed great def chasing and pressing. Would have loved to see them run four flat with Casey isolating. Its been proven bigs cant stay in front of him. Horrendous 3 pt shot off the side of the backboard. Dont blame him for fouling out as most fouls were on help d when teammates got beat or someone failed to rotate.

Walker, 5: hustled and didnt force offense for a change

Wilbekin, 7: Very tough D and was a maestro at the high pick and roll. Made a few bad passes but also had 7 asst. Would have had 10 asst if teammates hit open shots. Really showed against a pressure defensive team we need him as the main pg.

Yeguete, 2: Had a very unlikely game for him. Height and toughness from KSU seemed to effect him. Hook call on him to open the game was laughable.

Young, 9: Without him we lose by 20. He was in beast mode (finally). All over the court helping teammates. He owned the glass when he was in. You saw him running at shooters so often because our rotations were horrible and he was doing what he could. Teammates failed to feed him in the 1st half to our detriment.

Graham, 5: Defended well chasing through screens.

Billy, 3: Im tired of him having to revamp the offensive philosophy for the 2nd half of games. Either the coach scouting it messed up or there is not enough emphasis on getting young looks in the 1st half. Defensively our rotations were totally out of whack but he was good at switching it up. Glad he benched Rosario since he was atrocious. I think he failed at recognizing this was a game for KB to play off the ball and let Sw do his thing. Thought he had and missed some chances to dictate going big or small. Sad to admit you got out coached by Weber.

Refs, 1: They were horrible all around. A true sign of a crap ref is when you see blatantly obvious make up calls throughout the game like this. Also when the worng ref is making the calls which happened too often.

KSU - They opted to play old detroit piston style, which worked well. They went with the lets use a ton of moving screens and get very physical. The refs cant call everything and it worked.

Team Off, 2: KB misreading all night. Rosario forcing all night. Failing to look for murphy. Failing to pound it inside to young despite being open. Seemed to be running the same high pick set without variation too much. The 4 flat was working some but used sparingly.

Team Def, 1: Simply put our rotations were way off. KSU offense was not that obscure that we should have been that out of sync.

Other thoughts: Tired of good FT shooters chocking on the front end of one and ones.

Feel free to discuss.

Can't disagree with what you posted. Scottie needs to run the team when he is in the game, which should be almost all of the time.

If a 5 playing up to expectations then your expectations for Murph must be really low. I couldn't give him more than a 3 tonight. Agree with most everything else.

Murphy is in the game primary for his offensive contributions. His team mates failed him because they did not even look to find him. So although I agree he didnt play great I guess I am not faulting him as much directly.

I already stated he was very weak on the glass and poor defensively (As was the team as a whole).

I think Tupac was blaming the guards more for his lack of touches tonight then his play. OTOH, I didn't think he did a good job at all on the boards. KSU's big really bothered him.

There was another post about the lack of any inside out action and I thought that was a valid criticism.

So far this season his 3 pt shot has looked good. All of them have been from either the top of the key or elbow extended. This was his first from the corner and yes it was ugly. With that said I didnt mind the shot. He was open, it was in the flow of the offense, we needed a 3 and he has been shooting it well this year.

While I am not disagreeing on Erik's shortcomings tonight I will say that if the rest of the team (other than Patric) had shot the same percentage he did we would have won the game.

My thoughts:

Boynton: I agree was not good tonight, but appeared to be coming around. I like that he took the ball to the rim more than shot from the arc. That is what he must do until he heats up from the outside.

Rosario: I agree he was terrible on defense. KSU has scouted him and constantly went to whomever he failed to track closely enough through screens. Offensively, I thought he took pretty decent shots but for whatever reason they just did not fall tonight. The 0-5 inside the arc is what really hurt UF. He kept taking the ball to the rim and would miss and the time or two he tried the little pull up he was way off too.

Murphy: Has appeared to me to be ill the last two games. He shot ok, but very infrequently tonight. Played a step slower than he usually does like his is sick again tonight. Did he get whatever Frazier had? I guess not but no assists, no blocks, no steals etc. That is unusual for him.

Prather: I can not as easily excuse letting the ball just fall out of his hands for a turnover when trying to end bound the ball. Given what happened a week ago, how in the world can he be that sloppy with 58 seconds to go in the first half? BTW, his 3 point shot is not even the worst in SEC history. That may well go to Jodie Hultberg of LSU who was a good shooter but once inexplicably on a corner 3 attempt like Prather took tonight shot the ball in the superstructure behind the backboard that held it up. He had too good form on the shot though.

Wilbekin: We have a PG. I think that is established. In basketball you need a PG and a C. UF has that and some good pieces to go with them. He pretty much shut down Spradling once he was switched to him.

Yeguete: He was inexplicable to me? He did hit his FTs, but other than that his play was a mystery. How can a guy who hustles and plays as hard as he does lay an egg like his game tonight?

Young: I agree that Young was exceptional. Games like this are why he will be a mid first round pick in the NBA draft. He has developed a pretty nice offense. In big games he comes to rebound.

Donovan: I am not sure why it took him so long to the hot hand. I also do not understand running a play for a Boynton 3 point shot out of a time out?

Sometime you can learn more from a loss than a win. To me the lesson available from this game are:

1. If you do not show up and play hard every night you can lose. UF played well in the Zona loss, the same can not be said of tonight's effort. A coach can warn a team of this, but losses make the players take notice more.

2. UF has PG and that PG is Wilbekin. He needs to run the show 30 minutes a game. Boynton needs to back him up for 5 minutes a half and play the two the rest of his minutes.

3. If you are UF player and your shots are not falling, you have a center named Young who you should be feeding in the post. This can even be done in the first half.

4. UF's starting lineup should be Wilbekin, Boynton, Rosario, Murphy and Young unless a team with a big and big scoring 3 forces Yeguete or Prather into the lineup for Rosario at the 3.

Totally agree. IMO, at best Murphy gets a 3. Caught napping on the boards several times for easy KSU baskets.

I agree with Tupac that KB cannot be the pg anymore. I also noticed that Kenny never goes to his left. Billy needs to get KB going in any way possible. WY probably played his worst game.

Tonight's game made a little me nervous going forward. Who is the go to player when things get tight. See how the team rebounds going forward.

Scottie has to show more of a willingness to drive the ball to the hole. When he did so he had success for the most part. Too often teams will play off him knowing that he will peel back off the ball screen and look for the pass leaving the driving lane wide open.

He needs to learn to recognize this and takes what the defense gives. If he isn't comfortable taking the shot in the lane every time, go in under control and wait to see where the help side comes from. Learning a pull up mid-range jumper would pay dividends as well.

Billy D plays an 8 man rotation and the 5 guys that play the best, play the most.

Last night only Young and Wilbekin came to play.

No wonder, he went to the freshmen in the second half,

Boynton and Rosario were out of control, Prather and Yuguette reverted to their freshmen form and Murphy and Frazier were largely invisible.

I agree that Boynton showed some flashes tonight yet his three-pointers still look awful. I don't know why he's not being coached about the change in his form from last year back to what he showed as a sophomore and freshman. I did like that he was able to get some open two point looks to fall. He must be frustrated, hopefully he comes around.

I'm not as convinced that we have what it takes at point guard to this point. Teams are going to continue to press the heck out of our guards before they get to half-court until we show that we can consistently beat them off the dribble and that makes us slow at getting are offense started and makes it less likely that we get our bigs open looks. Wilbekin did have a couple of nice drives to the hoop in the second half and if he keeps that up it should ease some of that pressure a bit. I do agree that he is our best option at this point.

What happened to the Murphy from the Wisconsin game. He has not been an offensive threat of any consistency since then. He was one of the main reasons that everyone was hyping up the potential of this years team, he and WY have both disappointed a bit since then. Hopefully they can turn it around and this team will get a nice run here starting next Saturday.

Finally, Bruce Weber ran a clinic on how to get people open for inbounds plays in the last two minutes of a tight game. If you noticed he would start his ballhandler's at about half-court when the five second clock started and then they would both sprint towards the basket versus our strategy of having six people standing around underneath the rim as the inbounder tries to find an open man. Hopefully Billy paid attention.

Anybody seen the YouTube of the UNC Asheville guy bricking a free throw? Thats what Casey's 3 reminded me off. He flinched like he was afraid of getting hit and missed by as much as I've ever seen anybody miss.

Early season loses to tough teams aren't a big deal. If the kids learn from it and improve in the problem areas, these kind of losses are okay. The OP has the grades pretty right and if we don't figure out that Patrick is a lot more reliable than streaky 3 point shooters, we're gonna lose a few more like this one.

North Captiva, Rosario at SF, gets pushed around too much, rushes his offense and defense against decent teams of which K State proved they were, was a big fat zero. I bet even our freshman Devon Walker could have provided more offense and defense that Mike did. Rosario should be one of the first off the bench. Any of the taller freshman could start at SF, my thought would be Frazier, Walker/Graham. Rosario should come in for Boyton at 2g due to being short a box of Krispy Kremes of weighing enough to hold his ground. This will come up continually this season if we stay with him at small forward. He is playing out of position.

This game showed we need a lot work on offense and a new line-up which allows us to be able to finish tough games. That isn't us now. Kentucky, if they sweep us, it will be because we haven't got our line-up down to where we play to our guys strengths.
