Most of the teams in the SEC do recruit outstanding Basketball players. Merely because a player is not ranked in the top 50 means little regarding the quality of player they become with time.

A few examples playing on this year's team are Yeguete, Wilbekin, Prather and Frazier. I would add Murphy, but I don't know whether he was rated in the top 50 or not.

Aside from recent Ky teams, most top teams have a few very top players and a high quality supporting cast. Some teams have essentially nothing but a supporting cast. Take, for example the 2004 Gator class and the Gator 2005 (SEC tournament), 2006 & 2007 Championship Teams. Brewer was the only fellow who was a Mickey D player, and Horford was somewhere in the top 50. Other than that, all other players were lower ranked. Chris Richards, Florida's Mr. Basketball, might also have been top 50, but I can't recall for sure.

The SEC always fields outstanding teams in all sports. Some years things just don't pan out well for teams in a sport, and this appears to be one of those years for basketball, although Tennessee is going to be considerably better once their best player heals, and, curiously enough, last year they did the same thing, looked horrible in pre SEC play, then ended up 2nd in the conference with a 10-6 record and a 3-1 record against Vandy and Florida.

The SEC is not merely a men's Football conference, it always fields a lot teams in a large number of sports that are competing for the National Championship.

Short-term thinking and a limited perspective make some people think only of men's Football and Basketball when they consider sports, rather than the veritable plethora of NCAA sports being played.

I think they lost 88% of their scoring from last year and is not the kind of school that attracts a bunch of freshman one-and-done types.

They have one shooting guard, Kedren Johnson, who has a nice all around game. Odom and Fuller are the only players that we would remember at all from last year. The other bigs are really green.

This is definitely a rebuilding year for them.

It matters for seeding this year and longer term and it matters when we recruit kids who want to play in a good conference. It matters in the attendance we will get at home (which also can impact recruiting), and it matters for the basketball portion our TV deal long term, if the conference stinks the good contract with tons of games on TV doesn't follow. That in turn affects our exposure as a league and makes things worse.
Other than that, it's no big deal.

I don't get any joy from seeing our conference do poorly. I guess elite programs like UK are unaffected by the quality of their conference, but it certainly makes a difference for the rest of us.

That being said, I expect all of these teams to be much better during the conference schedule. I remember all of the talk about how bad the Vol's were last year during November and December and they wound up sweeping us.

Losing an sec game to anybody besides UK, Mizzou or bama (only on road) would be a huge disappointment given the pathetic quality of the other teams.
We just lost to k state, so obviously when the offense disappears anything is possible, but there won't be a top 4 seed with 6 or more losses given this sec sos.

Since we missed great opportunities to nab 2 great road wins against Arizona and Kansas State, we are going to pretty much have to go 13-3 or better to have any shot at nabbing a top 3 seed.

It is really sad that the SEC as a group is performing in such a mediocre way through the OOC schedule.

Before we throw ourselves and our conference off of any buildings remember this. While we are a football first conference - don't throw our conference under the bus.
2006 and 2007 the Gators were back to back Nat'l Champs
2008 Kansas (Big XII)
2009 UNC (ACC)
2010 DUKE (ACC)
2011 UCONN (BigEast)
2012 Kentucky (SEC)

No other conference has won 3 Natties over that same time. No other conference has had a team back to back winner. So back off of the SEC as a non- B-ball conference. This might be a down year, but there is much left for several of the teams.

The Gators will still get in in March, and after that, we just need to perform for 40 minutes unlike the last 2 years where we have fallen apart at the end of the Elite Eight game. We lost to Butler - the runner up in 2011 and to Louisville who lost to the champs in the Final 4.
