An observation: Rolin, a 4 star Gamecock pledge flips to the good guys and people were over the moon.
Then Davis commits and reading this thread, the reaction is a little slower, less zesty and it reads with an unwritten air of hesitancy.
Why?
I have a hunch. It's that all-important star.
I'm willing to bet that aside of the more hardcore recruitniks, not many of us knew much about Davis or much, if any more, about Rolin. The differentiating factor in our assessment then? It's that one was a 4-star, one was a 3-star. I may be wrong, of course but that is the usual outcome.
These kids all look good on film - that's the job of the guys putting together the highlights packages. What we have to trust is that Muschamp and his staff are greatly more in the know than we are. If Quinn/Muschamp are willing to take a commitment from a "lowly 3 star..." now when Quinton Powell decommitted but said he was still considering the Gators, I'm backing their view 100%.
Reading around on Davis today, there's not a lot out there on him but those that know of him seem to speak very highly. He sounds like a "Muschamp-style" player. Last year ESPN had Antonio Morrison as a 3-star linebacker and he didn't pan out too bad, just ask EJ Manual. I like to think there may be some comparison between the two recruitments.
Personally, I think we can read plenty into this and feel extremely good, from how the coaches operate with limited scholarships in an already stellar class.

Welcome to Gator Nation, Jarrad!
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT post! Mostly the welcome you gave to a new Gator!
Hopefully these four guys stick. McMillian solidified his status as a Gator, and it also appears Rolin is solid. I think Hearns still plans to take a visit to Ohio State, or has that already happened?
It's never official until the LOI gets faxed through.

Don't know if there's a big difference between Rolin and Davis, but Davis can get on the field sooner. He won't be waiting a year to heal from ACL surgery.
I know the point has been made over and over, but the star rating system is garbage. Does anybody really believe these services put the resources forward to actually scout every kid or do they rely on 2nd hand reports And hype?
Muschamps scouting methodology is so detailed that I fully expect him to recruit more 2-3* guys bc he is uncovering the important metrics that the services always miss. Further, I have come to expect that all these recruits are quality people and program guys. Bo Morrison was a 3* and will very likely be 1st team All SEC as a true soph. This new kid will probably turn out to be a stud on special teams next season.
If Jenkins leaves, we need bodies at linebacker. It is one of the few positions where a physically read kid can play early, at least in normal down and distance packages, on instinct alone almost. Furthermore, being short on linebackers really hampers special teams.
they liked this Jarrad more than Trey Johnson and people would be going crazy for Trey Johnson
There are always recruits that go under the radar every year. The staff has shown that they can evaluate talent so if a kid is good enough for them, you can be pretty sure that he is a good player.

Morrison was rated a 4-star on other services.
Don't fool yourselves and think our coaches believe every prospect we give a ship to is going to be a stud at the next level. You also have to recruit for depth, or even just warm bodies at a position if you're in dire straights.
I would guess Davis is a depth recruit, much like Riles. And nothing wrong with that. Neither were reaches by any stretch.

Yes, many people believe these services put the resources forward to scout a large number of high school prospects. Do you have a membership on Rivals, or any other service? If you did, you'd realize for example the folks at Rivals are all over this stuff. They go to the combines, all-star games, regular season games and talk the recruits and their coaches extensively. We've come a long way since Bill Buchalter. The services aren't perfect, but they're much much better than 10-15 years ago.

You really believe Muschamp has cornered the market on how to identify future All-SEC players from the pool of 2-3 star high school players? Really? I have a few pyramid schemes you might be interested in.
And Morrison was not an under the radar recruit. He was rated 4* on other services.

The star rating systems are not garbage, at least not for the legit sites like Rivals and 247. They just have limitations.
They include:
1) not taking character into account.
How many 5-stars have busted due to lack of work ethic, lack of discipline and/or criminal behavior? A lot. Lack of talent/poor evaluation is rarely the issue. I'd also add that I don't think the sites should start considering character. It's too subjective and should be left up to the coaches (at least, the ones that care about it).
2) lack of comprehensiveness.
Sometimes good players just happen to play in a very small town, on a very bad team and/or on a team that does not showcase their talents (i.e., great running back in a pass-heavy offense). As for-profit businesses, these sites make the best of the staff resources they have. And I think the better sites (mentioned above) do a pretty good job of it.
3) late blooming players.
Sometimes guys just don't flash their full potential until they reach college (or, in some cases, towards the end of their senior year, when consensus opinions have already been established). It might be due to a late growth spurt height and/or weight-wise.
4) politics.
All sites probably have some of this. It's the need to evenly balance out the rankings geographically and by school to have as much widespread appeal as possible. As many highly ranked recruits as Florida has each year, there are probably more in actuality. The sites probably figure that readers in other states/regions will get a little tired of reading about the sunshine state.
So again, the star systems are far from garbage, but they aren't the last word either. They are simply a tool for evaluating the success of recruiting efforts prior to actual wins/losses 3-4 years later. They are not THE tool.

They could have gotten somebody hire rated than Davis. There isnt much difference between a high 3 star and 4 star recruit. This is the kid they liked and they got him. They told Trey Johnson to come another weekend which shows you who they like better. Would you call Trey Johnson someone added just for depth? (every player is added for depth thats the point)
