Smile FSU Game Box Score MVG: Patric Young

Patric Young led a very balanced Gator attack in a 72-47 thrashing of the FSU Seminoles. Patric made 5 of 7 shots for 10 points and a team leading 8 rebounds for a Value Score of 64. More impressive was his physical intimidation on defense. Kenny Boynton did not shoot well from the 3-point line but his defense and hustle resulted in 10 of his team leading 14 points off of FSU turnovers, ultimately giving him a Value Score of 58. Scottie Wilbekin nosed out a pack of Gators for third with a Value Score of 53 earned largely through a team leading 5 steals and 5 assists.

The Gator defense stole the ball from FSU faster than EW at a taco stand. Many steals were converted directly into Gator fast break layups. The resulting 37 point blowout lead enabled Gator freshmen to get quality minutes to finish the game and still keep the Seminoles under 50 points. FSU's 47 point output is their lowest total ever in their home Donald L. Tucker Center.

The Florida Gators have 10 days off to finish the academic semester before going on the road for their biggest challenge of the young year against the 8th ranked Arizona Wildcats.

Thanks Jason.

Yes, just about everyone looked pretty good in this box score, except walker - 0 for 2 FGs, 0 for 1 free throws, and nothing else; and Obbuze - 0 for 1 FG and nothing else.

Mr T,

Yeah, I don't like highlighting those bad stats because the game was well in hand and the freshmen played too few minutes to get any rythm. More noticeable was that the Seminoles scored several points in the closing minutes. It was the only time in the game when their players were not under constant duress. The speed, quickness and at times, physicality of the Gators really made the Seminoles look bad. Can the Gators keep it up or are they just an injury away from losing their dominance against quality teams? Right now, it doesn't seem to matter as they can roll 8-deep with a quality group of kids that genuinely seem to like each other and play as a team. The postgame locker room video showed they have a good vibe and they thoroughly enjoyed the azzwhooping they put on the Seminoles. Luv it!

I also like the interplay of Coach Donovan and the constancy of his message. Game in game out he constantly praises and encourages his teams while at the same time critiques them, saying they can get better. Billy is not an emotional rah rah, jump in the player's arms coach like Boom. He lets his players enjoy those youthful, exhuberant emotions while he provides that constant, grounded, guidance as a ball coach and as an elder mentor when they mess up off court. The process works well when the team is comprised of players who are willing to listen and respond well to the discipline when it is handed out on occasion. Those that do not work well in this kind of environment don't usually stick around.
