NASCAR drivers: fitness or no ?

Interesting article in USA Today, yesterday. It was in the special NASCAR section. Gist is that most of the drivers are NASCARS fittest ever. Drivers like Casey Kahne, Jimmy Johnson and Michael Waltrip run half-marathons. And some of you might know that the 54-year old Mark Martin has been a dedicated weight-lifter for many years.

But there are exceptions, most notably Tony Stewart and Clint Bowyer, neither of whom are into fitness. Said Stewart, "It's not like you have to get out of the car and push the damn thing." And Bowyer, "How hard is it to turn the wheel ? It's power-assisted."

Overblown. No doubt they're in better shape than ever. Carl Edwards does back flips! So what. Smoke will never do a chin up. But he'll probably win the championship.

Golfers are probably fitter than ever also, they still aren't athletes.

Stewart's down-the-stretch performance, in 2011, is still being talked about as the finest in NASCAR history. Go figure, for chubby guy. Doesn't he know he should be doing P90X ?

IMO, he may be the best race car driver, any form of racing, on the planet. I still remember him running down Casey Kahne, one race, saying over his radio, "Here kitty, kitty."
