Smile Haslem closing on record

"Haslem will come into that game needing only two rebounds to pass Alonzo Mourning for Miami's all-time lead in that department — Mourning grabbed 4,807 rebounds in 593 regular-season Heat games, while Haslem is at 4,806 rebounds after 605 games."

I will never forget when the Gators played at Duke in Haslem's frosh season, when Duke had that Lottery Center who said after the game he expected an easy time, but really had to work hard to keep up with UD. And that was before he leaned down. Of course, he was voted the strongest player in the SEC all four years he was a Gator.

Really wonderful that he has done so well with Miami.

I had him as being in the top 15-20 player in the draft that year.

turns out if you look at that draft and re-did it today based on NBA career, that's about right.

NBA scouting and player evalutions are extremely annoying sometimes.

A few years back I read about some guy who has a metric that does a pretty good job predicting NBA draft ranking. At the time Haslem was by a pretty good margin the highest ranked guy not drafted.

Also I agree that the Duke game as a Frosh should have clued all the scouts in. The Duke player was Elton Brand. The fact that a Frosh could hold his own against a SR who would be the number 1 overall pick in the next NBA draft should have clued in everyone too.

Four years later, I knew he was not likely to be picked, but I was shocked by that.

Haslem at draft time was overweight and relatively weak, plus the whole kicking the ball thing might have hurt him, not being drafted was a wake up call and no one has worked harder since

I don't think he was ever relatively weak compared to other college players. He certainly has changed his body to stay in the NBA. I don't see how not being drafted was a wake up call as I recall it was not that big a surprise.

"relatively weak?"

are we talking about the same Udonis Haslem who was ranked as "the strongest player in the SEC" by Sports Illustrated who in the article had a picture of him with a crushed rim in his hands?

I'll agree that he was soft in the gut, but he was strong, had good footwork, and always had a nice touch out to 18 feet.

another game that should've queued the scouts in was the title game against Michigan St. Haslem showed up big against Zack Randolph.
