Saul Smith proves he is a scumbag
Was suspended by u of minn after his arrest for DUI.
Even daddy couldn't protect him from this one. The only difference is we know UK would have turned a blind eye (see rod Strickland).

Being arrested for a DUI does not make someone a scumbag.

So you're calling about 90% of this board scumbags because they may have a nip or 2 before, during and after Gator games or any other social setting?

If I am not drinking and you call me a scumbag, I get very upset but call me a scumbag after I have a few and I just say .... f&*k it, who cares?

I have known many people who are dead because of DUI. There is no excuse for it.

I'm sorry. You must have confused social drinking with the conscious decision to operate a two-ton vehicle while drunk - not caring who dies as a result. I often get those mixed up also...

That's absolutely untrue. It does not take many drinks to blow a DUI. A tiny percentage of the potential DUI folks get caught. It's just potluck.

So then I guess smith is both unlucky and a scumbag.

Guys. A DUI does not a scumbag make. Nor is it an overly reliable indicator.
But being overly and anonymously judge mental might just be.

Some people drive drunk themselves, others have a career that includes counseling those brought to the brink of suicide (or homicide) having lost a loved one to someone who's just like "90% of this board" I guess. Its all a matter of perspective.

I doubt many of you would call George W. Bush a scumbag just by looking at all of his apologists on Too Hot over the years but he did get a DUI as many successful people have...not defending the act however and if there is any state in America that should have harsh penalties for DUI it is Kentucky. The worst DUI crash in US history happened in Carrollton, KY on May 14, 1988. An idiot named Larry Mahoney with a .24 bac crashed head on into a school bus filled with kids headed home from King's Island. The gas tank in the bus exploded and 24 kids and 3 adults burned to death. Many others were grotesquely burned including a future Kentucky football player named Harold Dennis. Mahoney only did 11 years pathetically. Having lived in Kentucky, Smith should be familiar with that tragedy and have been smarter than this. I believe he did go to law school.

So could we put it down as a horrible error in judgment that proves he is probably not responsible enough to be a coach of young men in college, where drinking is already a major problem?
Labeling someone a scumbag takes it a bit far, but there is no excuse to drink and get behind the wheel. None. Period. Whether its the "legal limit" or well above that limit, it doesn't really matter.
I am amazed at how many folks have down played drinking and driving on this thread alone. Just because a lot of people do it doesn't excuse it.
The bottom line to it all is, it is illegal and, IMO, if you break the law in a position of great influence or power, don't be surprised if you get fired or chastised. You're in the public eye...fair or not, you play by a different set of rules.
Rod Strickland, though....yes, scumbag

The problem is that cities like my city (Tampa) have an extraordinary number of drinking establishments and very few ways of getting home afterwards (other than driving).

He blew twice the legal limit = scum
clearly an error in judgment that bad deserves jail time. Lucky he didn't hurt someone but it's time to pay for the crime.
Warning!!! The following link contains a picture of Saul Smith. Talk about a face only his mom could love...

C'mon, Tupac. I am sure you have blown a lot more than the legal limit.

Disappointed with your post. Making light of DUI which causes death and serious injury. I'm a responsible person so if I am going to drink I call a cab. I'd rather pay $10 then an attorney to fight a charge.

This. I don't throw around the "scumbag" label, but if somebody drives drunk, it fits....I don't care how many people do it and get away with it.

When I was much younger and much more foolish I did on occasion drive when I had too much to drink. Luckily for me and my family I did not hurt anyone or get arrested. It was an incredible stupid and irresponsible thing to do. One of the reason I did it was because of attitudes like those displayed in this thread. "its OK, everyone does it" "what are you some kind of wuss?" This is a particularly American and to some extent Asian, attitude. I spent a lot of time in Europe during my career and people would not even consider driving drunk. They wouldn't even drive the morning after. It was just not worth it financially (you could lose your job) or socially (totally unacceptable). This by no means says that people didn't get (very) drunk. I worked for the Finns and was involved in some monumental benders. We just didn't kill people going home.
