Notifications of new postings
My iPhone app has started alerting me when someone posts to a thread where I also posted. How do I turn that off?

The problem is my iPhone is my alarm clock and I get woken up in the middle of the night with messages that someone posted. Strange thing is that it's only certain threads, not all of them.

I asked on another thread and didn't get a response. I too need to turn my phone off at night so I don't get woken up by it.

Maybe it's related to "subscribed". I don't understand the difference between subscribed and participated. I'm starting to delete from the subscribed list and see if that helps.

I think I found it. In iPhone settings-notifications-notification center there are settings for GC. The notification switch was toggled on. It can be turned off altogether or just the sounds turned off.

You may have it set up in your UserCP on the forums to auto notify (subscribe) you to threads you post in. You can turn that off.

Incidentally, that's the default behavior on this forum and it seems like it should be an opt-in instead of an opt-out.

Thank you. I have been searching for how to stop these push notifications that are annoying and suck battery life. I would like them for big news, but for new posts they are annoying.

I think it is opt in when you first install the GC app.

It's opt-in when you first sign up at GC on the Web site, too. I think it's a pretty wasteful feature, personally.

I think I spoke too soon about a solution. I turned off notifications in the iPhone and they still come. Ironically, notifications about new posts in this thread about stopping notifications. I now turned off sounds for that app and maybe that will help. I don't mind flashing a banner so much as the alert sound. It either wakes me up in the middle of the night or I stop working to check it.
There is nothing in the app profile to turn off, so I'll have to check from the desktop.
Funny thing is its not every thread I've posted in, just some of them.

I would rather push notifications for a big commit or signing day letters being in, rather than every time someone on the boards posts a reply. The wrong post in too hot can keep it going for ages. And it dissuades people from posting at all, so they don't get a million notifications.

Thanks for the info. I was getting flooded by email(Comcast) notifications everytime someone posted a response to a thread I'd been to.
Went to UserCP & changed the setting as advised above. Voila, no more notifications.

I have a droid...it just recently started happening to me, too.

Can't speak for the droid, but on the Iphone it's in the setting for your phone, not the app.
