A few years ago my wife and I spent a week in Milwaukee. We stayed in the downtown area across the street from the Bradley Center. Within short walking distance were a lot of good and inexpensive restaurants/bar n grills. I stayed away from the nationally and internationally well known brands. I focused on the regional and local brews. Overall I had some very good meals and done great beer: stouts, lagers, and wheats. I recommend Milwaukee for the attractions, the food, and the beer (all can be had for a surprisingly low price). If you insist there is always the local Miller piss brews.

One of my favorite cities in the midwest, though the beer is better directly across the lake. Holland, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, MI are home to some of the best craft breweries in the country.

Strange, I agree with you about the Midwest (my dad is from St Louis). When it comes to beer and food the Midwest is one of the best places to be. Of course having having the influx of European, Asians, and Latinos makes for a great mix.

And every city has its own unique blend of ethnic history, Milwaukee with the Germans, St. Louis with the French and Dutch (we lived there for a few years), Minneapolis with the Norwegians and Swedes. Chicago's got a bit of everything, though I think it's the influx of African Americans from the Delta that set Chicago apart. There are lots of other cities that I know less about, but plenty of great restaurants and craft breweries throughout the region.

Strange, whenever I am in Chicago I get a big kick out of the cab drivers. Almost all of them are from outside of the USA. I go out of my way to start a conversation with them to find out where they are from and what they like to eat and drink. There even is some political talk too. My two favorite cab rides were by a driver from Tashkent and another driver from Egypt. The guy from Tashkent was very informative in telling me about that obscure place in Asia. The Egyptian was comical when it came to food. He told me that Egyptian cuisine sucked (his own words) and that he preferred Greek and Turkish cooking. I also had a cab ride by a guy from Sudan. He was very proud and happy that his homeland (the southern portion) was gaining independence and that their will be peace. It is amazing how much you can learn in a ten or fifteen minute Chicago cab ride!

From my experience, unless you're in a smaller town, most every Cab driver is from someplace else. And, yes, some of the most interesting conversations and perspectives.

Got back from Colorado last week and my cab driver was from Ghana. Fascinating guy. Not only did he know all about northern Africa, he'd lived in Atlanta for a couple of years and liked all the same restaurants I used to go to. He was all over the Ethiopian restaurant scene in Chicago.

My current favorite is a regional brew called Fat Tire using a recipe that the brewer developed from his travels (on a bike) studying breweries in Europe.
I'm partial to German and Belgian style brews.

I don't consider Fat Tire regional. It's one of the most ubiquitous craft beers in North America. It's a very solid and reasonably priced Belgian ale knockoff. My brother bought a case of it when we were in Snowmass two weeks ago. I typically prefer something a little hoppier with a higher ABV, but those really hit the spot at the end of the day. Drank two in the hot tub every day after I got off the mountain. It's got more heft than any American lager, but just as refreshing.

New Belgium, the brewery that makes Fat Tire has some other very good offerings. Ranger is a very good single IPA.

I like Fat tire too. Right now I am sipping on a Sam Adams Winterlager and enjoying every sip.
