Default Need help with a new hard drive

Okay, gonna try to combine brevity with necessary info.

According to people more in the know than me, the old hard drive burned out in my laptop. (I still have my suspicions that the motherboard might be damaged; it runs hot enough that it might actually burn you if you put your hand over the fan vent).

The Hard Drive the burned out was a 320gb, 5400rpm, 2.5" SATA. It's a Seagate Momentus.

I bought a Seagate Momentus, 500gb, 7200rpm.

The new one's in the laptop, I know it's hooked up right, but I'm having problems. I've tried running both a Windows Vista and a Windows XP install disc, and neither one gets anywhere. I get an error message that reads, "No bootable device."

What do I do? Does the HDD need to be formatted? I replaced one in another laptop years ago with no issues, but this one's nothing but a headache.

Have you tried entering the boot menu and selecting boot from disc drive?

Edit- Not trying to be a jerk, just starting from basics. If your computer doesn't recognize either disc as being bootable then you probably have bigger problems than your hard drive. When my laptop hd died I booted straight from an ubuntu disc for a few weeks and did not use a hard drive. Was a pain in the butt, but the hard drive never entered the equation.

Make sure in BIOS you set the boot order to the right order to boot from the DVD/CD disc first.

Did you just put the new hard drive in and then try to boot or did you leave out a step in your explanation? Usually a new hard drive comes with software that you use to configure the hard drive so that it can be booted.

Yeah no disc, which I thought was kind of weird.

I'm pretty sure there's more wrong with this thing than the HD. Half the time, it won't even make it to the system menu to let me into the boot options. It just freezes on the initial load screen, and in five minutes the thing's hot enough to leave a blister. Now I just have to hope that Best Buy will accept me returning it without opening it.

When you power iron hit F12 until a menu comes up. Choose to boot from the DVD.

That isn't good or hard drive related.
