I went from having the same flip phone for the past four years to a Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket. Will be shipped to me within days. I know nothing about Android or the Android Market. Can anyone recommend some apps to get me started?

Those are some that I have. Of coure Hulu and Netflix are better on tablets and require their own memberships and fees. I really dont pay for a lot of apps and I think these are all free.

A few that I find essential: Lookout mobile, pretty much all of the google apps, HBO Go, Watch ESPN, ESPN Scorecenter, Trapster, Speedtest mobile, Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook, Youversion Bible, barcode scanner, amazon mobile, CBS sports, trapster, GasBuddy, Pandora, iheartradio, spotify, Gator Country, flickr, and if you decide to root, ClockworkMod ROM Manager and Wifi Tether

Thank you for the great suggestions thus far. My phone will be here tomorrow. Got my list of apps to download. After using an iPod Touch for many years, I'm looking forward to using an Android phone. For me, when I held the 4S next to the Samsung GSII Skyrocket, it was a no-brainer. Love the 4.5" screen.

Evernote, Poynt & Where's my Droid are some I use.

Depending upon your carrier and minute plan, Google Voice Callback can save you some money.

Also, get the Amazon app store and an amazon account. Amazon gives their customers a free app every day for andriod. I have gotten some great paid apps free with this account. Last week, they gave out Office suite Pro version free. Normally, this is a $9.99 app.

I'd avoid that. You'll find those run down your battery and really aren't needed with android's architecture.

I just got the iPhone and there is a "starters app" section in the App Store popped up to help select new apps for the phone. I'm sure the droid market markets something similar. It sold be worth the te to look there for starters.

Or just use Google Music. Install the desktop client and it will upload all of your music to the cloud (I have ~30GB) and you can access it anytime via the Android app with no need to take up storage space on your phone.
