Fellow Admins: iPhone in Exchange environment
We are considering switching to the iPhone at work. We have Exchange 2003 and are very concerned with security (I work for a bank).
Do any of you guys have the iPhone in an Exchange environment? I'm curious to hear your impressions, good or bad. How well does it work, security, that kind of thing.
I've got some requests in to our carrier and I've searched quite a bit online but I can't find much regarding Exchange 2003.

Not an IT admin or anything but here at NASA they use exchange environment and there are those that use government issue iphones.
Not sure how much i added to this discussion, but if the government is willing to use you. you gotta think it has some security.

I don't know for sure but I suspect they're probably using a newer version of exchange.
Several years ago, the company I worked for had a couple of Iphone(1st generation) users that I had to hook up to an Exchange 2003 server. Back then, you could use activesync for calendar/task/contacts but then you had to setup IMAP separately, I think. I also think that Apple fixed that even in first gen Iphones.
One thing you may run into depending on how the Exchange server is set up. If you have a single Exchange 2003 server and you set it up to use RPC over https then that will break Activesync.

I run it in Exchange 2007 with no issues, can't speak to 2003, though. We just use our webmail address and our standard username/password combo to pull it in. Simple stuff.
Now, our Blackberry users on the other hand.....

Thanks for the input. At first our local carrier rep assured us that all the security features would work, then she backed off a bit when I pressed for details. She's now researching with a regional carrier engineer to confirm that it will all work.
I really do hope it all works out, but we've got to be positive that it will work and be secure in our environment.

Steel, mind if I ask why you still have Exchange 2003? Is your IT department looking to upgrade soon to Exchange 2010?

Exchange 2003 was purchased back when the bank started. We're riding it as long as we can until upgrading, mostly due to economics.

Have you looked into going the hosted/cloud route? If not, I can get someone in our Office365 group to talk to you. Shoot me a PM if you're interested. I'm a Microsoft employee BTW.

They are used at UF, where the fear of releasing any personal data and showing up in the news is a large presence. As Brave said, username and password. UF does push some additional security feature, forcing the phone to have a pass code and locking it after 5 minutes. I think the iPhone traffic is encrypted.

Looks like we've been green-lighted (greenlit?) to move to the iPhone. We've found the documentation we need and the over-the-air data is encrypted at an acceptable level.
