Fox News Is "Fair And Balanced" Compared To Alternatives

"The best gauge is who watches these stations. Fox News Channel, as a percentage of viewers, includes more self-described libs and indies than CNN or MSNBC includes self-described conservatives and indies. Pew Research Center recently studied the cable channels' viewers' politics. CNN? Fifty-one percent liberal, 23 percent independent and 18 percent conservative. MSNBC? Forty-five percent liberal, 27 percent independent and 18 percent conservative. Don't know about the "fair" part, but Fox's audience was the most "balanced," with 39 percent conservatives, 33 percent liberals and 22 percent independents.

When I appear on Fox, as I did to promote my latest book, "What's Race Got to Do with It," I get mostly approving e-mail. When I get one that disagrees, the writer points out -- using facts, information or analogies -- what, in his or her opinion, undermines my position. But when I appear on Wolf Blitzer's CNN show -- oh, man! Hundreds of hostile e-mails accuse me of everything but the Lincoln assassination. Only rarely, such as when someone took exception to the book's premise -- that white racism no longer poses a potent or even significant factor in America -- does anyone argue intelligently, with facts or information. It's snarl, attack, name-call."

So his second argument is that when he appears on Fox, he gets mostly approving email to a fairly controversial opinion (setting aside the content of that opinion just for the purpose of examining an awful argument) and that proves they are "fair and balanced" and not biased? Wouldn't fair and balanced, based upon the faulty assumption that viewrship demostrates political bias, imply he would get mixed emails?

For Chrissakes, Fox gets 3 million viewers for its most popular show. That's less than ONE PERCENT OF THE US POPULATION.

Why is the left so damn concerned about a TV station that pulls in 1% of the population to watch?

I still pretty much just read my news, and find all the articles from all the news sources pretty close in actual facts. I'm not big on opinion shows, shock opinion shows and editorial shows. I'm not saying I haven't listened to them, or watched them from time to time when I come across them, but I choose to allow myself to make up my own opinion. I find myself agreeing every now and again with all of them, but not ever all the time, or even the majority of the time. Again, keep in mind; I watch shows from all slants when I actually do watch them.

It is of my opinion that all these networks and publishers have shows or editorials that slant.

Well said. I can't stand any of the mainstream media outlets. They are merely trying to entertain rather than inform. Fox and CNN are mirror opposites of each other. They both stink.

My opinion as well. I used to watch a lot of news TV; Fox, CNN, MSNBC, ect. Now I watch rarely. I feel like I've outgrown it.

What that survey shows, of course, is simply that Democrats watch a variety of news shows while Republicans are much more limited to Fox.

I have no problem with it at all. People can watch whatever they want. Just don't confuse, as the original poster did, the makeup of the audience with the content.

If you want to be fair and balance, watch one hour of Fox and one hour of MSNBC and you will have the balance where you get more than what you want to hear.

I am fair and balanced and won't watch any of the three networks as they really know how to pack one hour of news into a 24 hour program.

for me, I get all my 'news' from Rush! It makes it so easy - I just turn off my brain and he does the thinking for me.
