Default The Worst National Champion ever???

OK....gotta ask this question....In your opinion, which is the worst team that has won a national championship? This includes teams that split titles such as Michigan and Nebraska in 1997. Let's use 1970 to the present as the general time frame. My personal opinion is that BYU, the 1984 champ was without a doubt the weakest team to ever be awared the title.

1984 BYU has our Title, But LSU 2 years ago sucked. As well as the 01 OSU. I hate Travis Henry.

How about the 1990 Colorado team that had a loss and a tie and only avoided another loss because they scored the winning touchdown on fifth down?

OSU won in 2002, and it was Travis Stephens who ran all over us in 2001.

I think the '99 Noles were overrated, of course that could also be seen as me being bias. I just thought college football as a whole was down that year and the Noles had a very experienced team going against a bad ACC and a young Gator team. Then they played a decent Tech team for the title, but the Hokies probably also just took advantage of there really not being any great team that year. I think if you did BCS era only that '99 Nole team wouldn't win the title in any year but '99. '07 LSU comes in a close 2nd, talk about backing your way into the title. Dennis Dixon stays healthy the Ducks would have walked all over that team.

^^^^^ You beat me to it. In being the worst as far as ethically speaking--the fact that Coach Dan McCartney (correct me if I have the wrong guy), and the entire world SAW the 5th down played, and yet the coach nor the school nor commissioner of the conference did nothing to step up to the plate and admit the travesty. If memory serves me correct, only once before had a 5th down been played which allowed a team to win--and it was way way back in year--the "winning" school's persident forfeited the game saying winning honestly was more important than winning at any cost.

Colorado didn't even come close to such an act and was awarded a split MNC with Ga Tech. I recall CU won the AP title while GT won the UPI. Bogus MNC for Colorado that year IMO.

Gators 28 National champs 3......I had that bumper sticker on my truck for years.
Nebraska could have won the NC that year by kicking an extra point and going for the tie with Miami instead they went for 2 and missed, can't blame them. Miami beat F$U by 1 in the last regular season game, beat Nebraska by 1 in the Orange Bowl and lost to the Gators 28-3. Florida, West Virginia and Nebraska were the only ranked teams they played that year.

Particularly since the '84 Gator team won it on the field and was voted National Champs by the New York Times computer poll. In my heart, this was our first national champ squad.

I thought they split the title with Georgia Tech. GT was no great shakes that year either.

The worst National Champ in my lifetime would definitely be 07 LSU. I don't think I have to go too far in depth on that.

Miami 1983 - They were not even state champs
Miami 2001 - The beat the Nebraska which had just given up the most points in school history in its previous game against Colorado
Miami 1987 & 1992 - They were the Boise State of the day. Inferior schedule and played at home for the title.

They weren't even state champs in 89 either. F$U was. And Nebraska shouldn't have been in that 01 Rose Bowl, but that Miami team probably would have beaten Oregon or anyone else that year too.
