Default Atheist billboard creates a stir...

Quote:
LAKELAND, FL -- A 36-foot wide billboard that asks: "Don't believe in god? You're not alone," is upsetting quite a few people.

Apparently some Christians have a problem with the concept of free speech.

I don't see anything offensive about this board. I've encountered plenty of pro-Christian billboards during my time in the South. Those protesters should be ashamed of themselves.

What an innocuous sign. But atheists are the most discriminated against group in the country, so I can't say this story surprises me.

Funny, I don't see the modifier "Christian" in front of the word 'God' on that billboard.

I think it is their right to picket the sign if they want. I don't see any problem with picketing a billboard that you don't like.

The more they protest, the more publicity they give the campaign. It just makes atheists get louder and provides justification for being more out in the open. It shows an attempt at coercion by religious extremists, and it makes them look like nuts. Rational believers will also condemn such whining.

When I lost faith, I thought I was alone. It was a nice relief to find other people with a like mind.

I'm sorry you lost faith, that sucks...

On that note, I've got to start drinking my beer warm... I might as well get used to it now.

Do you not see a problem with people picketing anything they don't like? There is something to be said for exercising your rights responsibly. Even though the protester's were within their rights to picket--I'm having trouble understanding what there was to disaprove of concerning this particular billboard.

Atheists are the most discriminated against group? Wow ... someone apparently hasn't been to Jersey - where they are worshipped among the liberal elites.

Try getting a decent job as a pro-life, white male in Jersey. FAGEDDABOWDITT!!!!

There seem to be a lot of ironies at play in this situation

Of course, this "message" should be protected as free speech, but it has more of a prankish/needling feel to it. "Let's put our finger in the eye of the majority and watch 'em get angry."

Or, is this just simple proselytizing? The Great Commission for atheists? Will atheist missionaries force their Western style beliefs on peoples of "simpler" cultures in an attempt to make them give up their belief in God/gods?

Or, is this just the annual membership drive?

Or, information for an atheist support group?

In the linked photo, I don't see where the billboard says "You're not alone." But, I'm sure many believers in God would find that answer to that question to be full of irony. Maybe that was the intent.

If Hell is as good as I imagine it to be, we'll have good beer choices, better music, hotter women, and more interesting company in general. Maybe we can put that on the billboard.

Free speech works both ways.
If he wants to go to hell don't try to stop him.

I don't think it is problem. I believe people have the right to express their disapproval of things. As long as they don't infringe on the other person's rights I have no problem with it.

If you think the sign should be allowed, then maybe you should review the article.

regarding a protester:
"His message was simple: bring the sign down."

There is a contradiction within your stance. The protester is trying to infringe on freedom of expression.

And if it's as bad as "they" say, I'll be too busy shaking hands and reminiscing to notice.
