Default AC is out, AGAIN!

It is only a 4 year old unit and we have had to have a repair man come out 5 times already. This time it is blowing air, just not cold air. Any suggestions?

If you've been using the same repairman, get a different one.

If you have a fan outside I use to have problems with bugs crawling in there and cutting off the electrical circuit. Might be something to look into.

Sounds like you may a frozen coil. Is your filter changed every 30 days, does the coil appear to be frozen over? How is your air flow? If the filter is changed regularly is the coil still iced over? It could be low on freon. If your coil is dirty it may need to be cleaned. This could also make your coil freeze.

If your coil is frozen, turn the unit on fan only, get a hair dryer and physically heat up the coil and melt the ice. Continue heating the coil until all ice is gone, then reinstall the filter and turn unit on.

Let me know if I'm right.

That sounds about right Panama. I had that problem earlier this year and was advised to do that by my AC guy. It worked. I have since replaced it with a Trane. Damn this thing blows cold!

The real question is why are you running the AC with such beautiful weather?

My new unit kept blowing compressors. The company finally sent out someone to clean the acid out of the lines I believe. I haven't had a problem since then.

I would see if you qualify for the $1,500 credit to replace an A/C unit, check the BBB for the company with the best record, and put in a new one.

I worked as an industrial mechanic for twenty years. I doubt your unit is going to get better with age. At some point, it is cheaper to just replace... with a different brand and installer.

1- use better filters
2- change filters often (6 x per yr)
3- put clorox in line when you change filters
4- buy a better brand (Trane, Bryant) not Goodman, Amana, etc.

A little known fact. Many of the brands are made by a few select manufacturers. For example Bryant, Carrier, Magicaire and Comfortmaker are made by Carrier. Amana, Gibson, Maytag, Frigidaire, Kelvinator, Nutone, Broan, Philco and Tappan are made by Nordyne. Rheem and Rudd are made by Rheem. Goodman makes Goodman, Janitrol and Arcoaire. Trane makes Trane and American Standard.

Best bet is to find a AC contractor that has a good track record and offers a good warranty.
