This is par for the course this year. Repeating as MNC is hard because everybody throws every obstacle in front of you all year. It's a test of nerves and will as much as a test of athletic skills.

We are in the media bullseye and anything we do gets blown out of proportion. If Texas were #1 and one of their players did this, the same thing would happen. Geeky little Jeff Schultz of the AJC spent his entire column calling Spikes classless today. He is right that what Spikes did was wrong, but at least Brandon admitted it and will take his punishment. Schultz even said that UM wanted to let the whole thing blow over. Not true! Once he saw the taped replay, he met with Spikes and handled it. Not many other coaches would do that!

A. The words "EYE-GOUGE" themself bring with them a certain level of disdain no matter who does what to whom or whether the incident even takes place.

B. Video footage (which is all over the Internet) shows the player in question seemingly trying to get his hand in the opposing players facemask.

C. As you said - it's the FLORIDA GATORS who are the suspects and therefore that BIG target on our back makes us an easy villain.

D. Most of those who are causing the rukus are our SEC foes so consider the source.

E. If you take footage from the game showing the rough and dirty play on behalf of the Dawgs putting everything in context it paints a whole different perspective - but that's not happening so this is what we are left with.....controversy!

So just because he did not SUCCEED in his effort that makes the EFFORT TO DO SO acceptable - or excusable, to you?

I dare say you would have a completely different tone in your comment if Tebow was on the receiving end of such a ploy - even it it failed, by a Bulldog on Saturday.

And frankly, Tebow's excusing and rationalizing the play after the game was just as embarrassing as Spikes' effort.

Both were utterly disguisting.

And this 'half-game suspension' is a freaking joke. Hell, the Georgia player just might have a legitimate civil action against Spikes AND The University of Florida.

All those who chime in with comments about FSU or Miami players being thugs but excuse this (not sure if you are one or not, this is a more general comment) need to rethink things.

Even the postgame ESPN Monday night crew (Stuart Scott/Matt Millen/Steve Young) took a crack at Spikes. It looked like the same thing happened during a scrum for a fumble in the Saints/Falcons game, and one of them ridiculed the half-game suspension Spikes got and did some very bad math ("That's 20 minutes of football.").

We might as well face the fact that, for whatever reason, we are hated nationally more than any other team that gets on a roll, always have been and always will be. It's expected from our rivals, but the way the wannabes outside our sphere of influence are acting, they'll throw their Viagra away when we finally lose a game. The only thing to do is keep winning and keep everybody else unhappy. Boo hoo.
