cavemen77 is just really nice
Default I Just Received the Greatest News of My Life

Ever since I was a kid... I have always dreamed of being able to go to a game in the Swamp. I have watched each Gators game I could religiously, surviving (somehow) the wonderful Zook years, and now cherishing the years we are having. The only thing that was missing was actually going to a Gators game... and I never thought it would be possible, seeing as how I live all the way out here in Utah, and I am a poor college student making funds a little tight. I honestly have wanted nothing more than to see Timmy play in person, and it turns out that I'm going to be getting that chance. I ran the idea by my dad one day of somehow making it down to the Swamp to see the gators play, he made a few phone calls, and we landed tickets/plane tickets to the game against Vanderbilt on November 7th. I just found out, and I could not be more excited. I land in Jacksonville on the 5th, have all day Friday, and then making the drive out Saturday morning for the game, heading back to the airport Sunday morning.

So my question for you all... what must I do to make my Swamp experience as complete as possible... as this may be the only time in a long time that I will be able to make it out here? When's the gator walk, and what else is there to do? Any and all help is much appreciated!

Where in Utah? Provo? I've flown into the Jacks airport for games and it is a great airport. There are speed traps between Jacks and Gainesville (like Waldo) so be carefull. My advice is to wear protection for STD. I stay with relatives when I go but there are several good night spots Fri night for college agers. Why not stay in Gainesville?

Gator walk is exactly 2 hours before gametime, but get there early for a good view. For the best time, you need a great tailgate, but that may not be as easy with you flying in. When we tailgate, we do it at Norman field east and across the street from campas. On 13th street and just north of Sorority Row. You can park there, but get there early( (about 8:00 am) or you will get shut out. Be sure to see the sights and sounds around campas by walking around some. You will be amazed at how far people will go at their tailgates. You will see generators, multiple TVs set up, great food, and of course lots of fun loving people around. If you don't do a tailgate, just go to the bars/restaurants along University Ave across from campas and party (they get very crowded though).

Staying in Jax, sorry to hear that. Friday night in Gainesville is a huge party for all the out of towners. Bars are packed, and there is just electricity in the air. There is not much like the feeling of waking up in Gainesville on game day.

If you absolutely can't do it make sure to get in to town early. I usually park around the law school then walk around campus looking for friends tailgates which for me are all over campus. I also try to stop at the bookstore to spend my absurd amount of money on Gator gear. Does anyone know if they still give out the game day mug when you purchase $75 or more?

Congrats on making it down for your first game, its like nothing you have ever experienced.

idk why i like it, but i always go in the gate at the south endzone.. you walk up some steps and right infront of you is the whole field and you can see the whole stadium. its awesome especially if it will be your first time.

Negative. For some reason they didn't order mugs this year. Don't know why though. We were sorely disappointed when we found out.

To the original poster:
Depends on what time the game is. If it's an early AM or 3 pm game, try and make the Gator walk. Swing by the bookstore and get some gear. Get to your seat early to enjoy the Swamp intro on the big screen. Wear a cap to wave when Vandy commits a penalty. If the game is done by sundown, I'd recommend walking out to Lake Alice and watch for gators until sunset, then go across the street and watch the Mexican fruit bats fly out of the bathouse at sunset.
If you have time, I always like returning to the scene of the crime on Sundays, usually they keep Gate 7 open, and you can walk into the Swamp and see how calm everything is compared to how rowdy it got the day before. Enjoy!

Bring a camera and capture the entire moment, those of us that go to every game take it for granted sometimes but it really is an incredible experience. Have a great time!!!!

Go out and get polluted drunk, pick a fight with a cop in the stadium, and get arrested. That's a great way to always remember your visit to the Gator game.

Ah, the memories...

Other tips from the Gator squad:
If you go to Subway and they give you poor service, DO NOT throw the sandwich at the sandwich artist.
If your car gets towed, DO NOT re-appropriate it without permission.
If you get mugged by five guys and a cop shows up, DO NOT retaliate on yuor attackers, lest ye be tased. And if you should get tased, DO NOT run away two blocks then return to hand yourself in.

Congratulations 77, I too have never been priviledged to a game at the Swamp. I have been to every away game except for lsu and uga but never the Swamp.

4-5 hours is the max drive I can stand, just don't have the time or patience for a 10 hour drive to the game. With two kids in college there is just no money to spend on flying, lodging, car, and tickets for my family. They are always at the games with me now.

Hopefully, once I get both out of school one day the wife and I will be able to fly down for at least one game at the Swamp. For now we just settle on one to two away games a year. I am just thankful that UF is the cash cow of the sec and on tv every week.

Only thing i can think to add is. Stay till the end of the game and sing with the players. Most people leave 4th quarter and even more leave at triple 0s.

I agree with most of the above.

Jacksonville airport is much improved since the renovation. There are THREE speed traps on US301: Lawtey, Starke, and Waldo. Count on spending 30 minutes to get through Starke; I kid you not, the place is a zoo, and there is no reason whatsoever.

Arrive early. I agree it's hard to tailgate when you're just in for the day, but it CAN be done. Donate a couple of steaks and a beer to a likely-looking group in return for the use of their grill. Use a disposable styrofoam cooler for your drinks. Buy pre-made burgers or sandwich fixin's.

Get your picture taken with the Albert statue, or the "real" gator statue outside the North End Zone, or the one on North-South Drive on the SW corner of the stadium. Check out the Hare Krishnas just north of the stadium. The student union duckpond has fallen on hard times; I can't recommend it anymore.

I like the Gator gear shop at the north end of the stadium. You can't get to it from inside, just from outside, and it closes before the game starts. It's always jammed, but they have a good selection, and hey, you arrived early, right?

Refuse to call it Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Insist on calling it Florida Field. The Swamp is also acceptable.

Check out the scalpers, even if you don't need a ticket. Ask them their price (off campus; it's illegal on campus) and just shake your head and walk away. Eventually that makes it cheaper for the rest of us!

I recommend cruising the tailgate areas and University Ave before the game. There are some strange folks out there and the atmosphere is wonderful. Coeds have recently adopted the Deep South fashion of wearing dresses to the game -- ah, progress!

The Gator Walk starts two hours before the game. Like the others said, you need to be earlier to get a good view.

Get to the stadium about an hour before kickoff and watch the warmups. Definitely don't miss the Swamp video right before the team comes on the field.

Wear sunscreen. The west stands go into shadow about 3:30pm. Depending on the seat, the east stands can be in sunshine right up to sunset. The east stands look directly into the sun, so a cap or visor is advised.

November can be either hot or cold. I have been to games then where it was over 90 degrees, one that was sub-freezing, and one that I started in short sleeves and ended up shivering in a sweatshirt.

Get your food and water before the game starts. Pretzels are good, hot dogs and pizza acceptable. The lines at halftime are formidable and you'll miss the halftime show. Besides, the footroom is tiny and it's hard to get in and out of your seat. They sell Pepsi (and sometimes water) in the stands, but the Pepsi is pretty poor quality.

Consume your alcohol before or after the game. Other threads report that they're clamping down on it inside the stadium. Outside, the open container law isn't enforced in tailgating areas, but it is on the sidewalks, and they seem to target out-of-towners.

If you're in the student section, prepare to stand the entire game. If you're in the alumni section, prepare to be asked to sit down, although I've found that people are very understanding about standing on a long play, turnover, fourth down, or when your view is blocked.

Stick around after the game is over. Watch the players sing the alma mater and fight song. If you get down to the first row, you might get a high five from Tebow or another player.

Definitely check out Lake Alice after the game. It's a great place to unwind. I didn't know about the bats, or that they leave Gate 7 open. I'll add that to my Gameday list.

Enjoy your first Swamp experience! By Gawd, it's great to be a Florida Gator.
