Mac the Ripper is a free DVD ripper for Mac. Handbrake is a free conversion utility for MTR output into Apple TV/iPod format (single mp4 from multiple VOB files) - Handbrake is both Mac and Windows.

For the artistic people out there, there is a freeware called Inkscape, which is basically a free and not quite as advanced version of Adobe Illustrator. It's still a very good vector graphics program.
