Mexico City is still safer than LA, where, incidentally, a man recently had to have both legs amputated after being bitten by dogs at a dog park.

They don't kidnap people in taxi's here.

Yes, there are large areas of Mexico which you couldn't pay me to go to. On the other hand, Mexico CITY is safer than LA.

Thinking Mexico is unsafe is like thinking the U.S. is unsafe. It is a big place. While some places are much worse than the U.S., much of Mexico is great. I have lived in Southern Mexico and will go back in 2 weeks. The food and art are both spectacular, the people warm and the weather great. I go to trek in the mountains, to dive, surf and fish. Spend more time in B.C., Canada and Europe, but Mexico is great.

Southern Mexico is one thing...but let me tell you about life just over the border.
Everything is fine in Mexico until you have a legal problem and/or find yourself in jail.
There are numerous stories about southern Californians who were pulled over in their cars in Baja Norte.
Mexican officials impounded their cars and they needed US gov't assistance just to get them back.
Others were involved in accidents that were caused by Mexicans...but they threw the Americans in jail instead.
One guy I know (who's Mexican-American) had to explain to their police that he didn't OWN the car...the bank did.
And only after they were concerned the bank would spend money and resources to get it back did they release it.

I worked at a company several years ago with an office in Mexico City.

After we had two employees attacked while visiting there on business, on two separate trips, we stopped sending anyone from out of the country into that office.

As manigordo notes, Mexico is big country with a lot of different regions. Some are as safe as you can find anywhere. I've been to the Yucatan a couple of times and would go back in heart beat with no worries from a safety perspective.

Rather than go by my anecdotal experience, here is what the State Dept has to say:

Estado de Mexico: Toluca is a major city/travel destination in Estado de Mexico -see map to identify its exact location: You should exercise caution in the municipalities of Coacalco, Ecatepec, Nezahualcoyotl, La Paz, Valle del Chalco Solidaridad, Chalco, and Ixtapaluca, which are eastern portions of the greater Mexico City metropolitan area, located just to the east of the Federal District of Mexico and Benito Juarez airport. These areas have seen high rates of crime and insecurity. In September 2012, the Government of Mexico sent military and federal police forces into the Municipality of Nezahualcoyotl in an effort to combat organized crime.

Mexico City isn't the worst by a long shot - there are several Mexican states the State Dept advises deferring travel - Mexico City area is not one of them.

That's what I'm saying. I'd feel completely safe in any case. Yes, I'm a Gringo, but I don't have any money.
