Default #1 in Pomeroy Ranking

After the loss to Az. We're now the most efficient team in the nation.

http://kenpom.com/

I don't have access to his inside stats, but he probably had us as a 2 or 3 pt favorite.

not hurt by the loss appreciably in the sagarin either:

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sport...in/bkt1213.htm

#2 in the composite and #1 in the predictor poll.
top 20 strength of schedule thus far in the season.

sagarin thinks we should beat arizona by 9 on a neutral court (i guess he assumes we can make an inbound pass in that scenario )

Don't be so cheap. It's 19.95/year and well worth it. Just teasing...
Before game the prediction was a 67-63 win (64% chance of a win) Amazing how close the final score was predicted. Indiana dropped from No.1 to No.2 with their loss, so all's not bad.

pomeroys's stats/poll doesn't care if you win or lose, though, right? it's all points per possession. correct?

No, Pomeroy predicts win or loss in every game of the season based on all the stats, etc. It even predicts the final score for every game and the chance of going undefeated, conference and overall.

but his ranking, his poll - is not win/loss based. he'll take that poll and make his predictions, but the poll doesn't factor in wins and losses.

Florida may be number 1 overall in these ratings but unfortunately they dropped in offensive efficiency ratings (from #2/3 to #4; behind #1 Indiana, 2 Duke, & 3 Pitt)) while holding firm in the defensive efficiency ratings (at #3 behind #1 Louisiville, 2 Syracuse).

That seemed to be the problem against Arizona - Florida had trouble getting in an offensive rhythm. The gators could also use Kenny Boynton back to his usual self!

It doesn't factor wins and losses because close wins and losses are entirely a factor of randomness. That's why we're ranked #282 in luck now. It should even out for us later.

None of the predictions for the game probably factored in Wilby's broken finger and Frazier's flu...or the fact that the ref's home cooking for Az included allowing their players to mug and even trip our players all game without a call and calling touch fouls on our team. The fact that the game was just a one point loss is actually amazing.

For what it's worth, the diehard basketball junkies really, REALLY love Pomeroy. They place more faith in his numbers than anything else. Personally, while KenPom is the premier reference for fundamental basketball nuts and bolts, I have also absolutely loved Sagarin rankings in general, but specifically for college basketball. As someone who ... for lack of a better way of saying it ... paid a little too much attention to spreads when I was in college -- and I'm not talking about Miracle Whip or Parkay -- I can say with the utmost of confidence that the Sagarin rankings are by far the best readily available simple reference for analyzing and predicting college basketball outcomes. Someone mentioned that KenPom didn't factor in Frazier's flu or Wilbekin's broken finger. That is true and certainly sometimes those types of factors influence the outcome. However, that is also part of the beauty of such computer rankings. Those extraneous factors that we consider are disregarded by the mindless computers. And oftentimes we seem to place too much weight on them. I'm not saying that they weren't influencial in this particular case, but rather that for whatever reason, over the hong haul, from my experience, the properly designed computer analysis and ranking programs do a better job, even in disregarding such factors that we do. Is there a correlation there? You decide.

I paid my $19.95 to Ken. Money well spent.

You can use the detailed information you get from his site for your March Madness pool and have a great chance to recoup the $19.95.

And if you ask him an intelligent question via email he will respond.

If you like Pomeroy, pay for the basketballprospectus.com subscription. A lot more articles there. They have more advanced stats than even Pomeroy, but they are only available for the NBA. Also, basketball-reference.com is very nice. Pomeroy has articles there ever now and then as well.
