Default Charity and the homeless

Are you charitable? Why or why not?

Your favorite charity? Why?

Do you give money to the homeless? Why or why not?

Not particularly...but I DO give money to Save the Ta-Tas every year. Why am I not very charitable? Well...I generally spend most of the money I make thereby leaving very little to be given to charity. (Do NOT get me started on the entire notion of tithing...) I also find that I don't trust charities to wisely spend the money they are given.

Favorite charity...well...Save the Ta-Tas is easy to donate to through work, so I guess that would be it.

No. I *NEVER* give money to the homeless. I view that as enabling their current behavior under the best of conditions. At worst, I just pissed money away to someone who's PRETENDING to be homeless because its easier than working. Panhandling is right up there with tithing to me...

I've given food to a homeless shelter before, never given a penny directly to the homeless. Too much of that money goes for drugs, alcohol or cigaretts.

Yes. DSM, my church, the Carter Center. Yes. Christ asks us to feed his sheep and while I agree that giving money directly to the homeless is usually enabling (and is not my preferred method) I am not asked to analyze the situation but to give.

The bible also says if you don't work you shouldn't eat.
2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat."

There are many that need assistance.

There are also many that just don't want to work and rely on soft hearts to feed and cloth them.

We need to separate the truly needy form the lazy a$$holes who are milking the system.

I don't know, I shouldn't judge myself. I hope I am.

It depends

We give money to the U. of Arizona every year. The school gave so much to my wife and I that we feel giving back is money well spent. We do not give money directly to the homeless, but do donate food and other necessities (toiletries) every year, as well as donating clothes. Occasionally we will give money if we have extra in our budget, but that hasn't been the case since our child was born.

I never purchase any big ticket item without giving to charity at the same time. I give to the Salvation Army, Food banks as well as to the Ky Colonels and through Rotary Club participate in ramp building as well as charity giving. I also give to my political organizations as well as many other non-profit agencies that have earned my respect. When we drive into Orlando we make bologna sandwiches to give to the many homeless folks at Kaley St.

Can't imagine living life the way others have described above. That some take pride in not being charitable is a choice of the petty. There is no "system" to take advantage of when one is giving to those in need.

I can agree with this only so far. It assumes that those being given to are actually "in need" and not just lazy bastards preying on the kindness and generosity of others.

I've probably donated 6 large trash bags full of clothes to charity organizations over the years. I also volunteered over 50 hours to Ronald McDonald house.

But, I usually don't give money to panhandlers.

Sporadically charitable
I give to MS Society and Marine charities (Any Marine care package, Christmas toys for Tots) and Shepard's Purse (shoe box of toys and toiletries sent to kids in need)

I give to the homeless through donations of food to food banks and donations to the Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has one of the lowest administrative overheads out there.

I could do better in this area. I give a little here and there but I typically don't go more than $25 a pop. I never give directly to the homeless. Not because I don't care, but more because I'm skeptical, which is unfortunate. I've been thinking lately about doing some sort of volunteer project. I never do this but in my opinion, this shows true compassion and probably feels the best because you're actively participating. I'm a hypocrite though because I never make the time.

My wife and I are pretty charitable and not only give to several different charities but volunteer our time at the church when asked to do so. For example, we are both "bell ringers" for the Salvation Army through our Baptist church plus we sponsor a gift box for a needy child age 6 to 8 overseas during the Holiday months. Of course we give every Sunday when that offering plate is passed along as well.

I also occasionally help out a paraplegic male age 48 in a Nursing home that has no family. I met him there when my Mother was in the same nursing home and I stayed in touch with him after she died. His total income monthly is $35 through Medicaid. He loves sports so I'll buy him t-shirts or sweatpants of his favorite team.

My wife and I are extremely blessed with what we have in life and our attitude is one of gratitude. The more we do and bring a smile to someone in need, the more GOD does for us.

Never give money to homeless---they use it to buy crack, booze or smokes. They get their food other places for free.

Is this just a curiosity thread or is there a point??

Btw, I'm surprised this is not on the Too Hot Forum. I've read over there more than once that people of certain political persuasions are more charitable. This thread doesn't seem to support that.

I've given money and donated items to various charities over the years, but I've become a bit more suspicious with regards to how much of that money actually goes to the people who need it. The major example that stands out in my mind is I used to give blood on a regular basis through the Red Cross. I stopped doing that when I found out they sold it to hospitals.

I actually prefer to give directly to homeless though I'll give food, not money.
