Perhaps people would be better off thinking of this in terms of probability. The more stars, the more likely the player will be good. The player can still suck. The less stars, the less likely the player will be good. But the player still can be good.

Smartest post I've read on this board in a while.

Right off I can't think of one but I do think when you get in the 3,4,5 star range a lot depends on their college coaching and some other factors on how well they may do in the NFL.

Alex Smith was a 2 star prospect and was the #1 overall pick of the draft. I guess stars lie sometimes.

They don't lie. Sometimes the star system just misses players. You can't scout every high school player in the country. Sometimes players don't reach their potential until the right opportunity comes their way. Many don't end up playing at their ideal position until college. I seem to remember Terry Jackson having a very low rating in high school. I also recall that he was an outside linebacker.

They lie, and they lie a lot. Lots of 5 stars are busts and some low ranked players, like you say, are either not scouted a bunch of don't mature until later. Stars don't matter very much aside from being a talking point for recruitniks. Sure, a lot of times it means the guy is good, but not all the time.
