SEC returning 9 starting QBs (other info)
The SEC will return a good base of veteran quarterbacks for the 2013 season. With spring practice underway at most SEC schools, seaching for a solid backup quarterback will be a priorty. Nine starters from the 2012 season will be returning under center, provided no one is beaten out. Here's the list of starters returning with last season's passing yards.
Aaron Murray, (Georgia), 3,893 passing yards
Johnny Manziel, (Texas A&M), 3,706
Bo Wallace, (Ole Miss), 2,994
AJ McCarron, (Alabama), 2,933
Tyler Russell, (Miss State), 2,897
Zack Mettenberger, (LSU), 2,609
Connor Shaw, (So Carolina), 1956
Jeff Driskel, (Florida), 1,646
James Franklin, (Missouri), 1,562
Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Kentucky, Auburn and Arkansas will be looking for someone to step into the starting position. The SEC looks to be strong with good experience at quarterback this season.
Georgia: 5 retuning on o-line
Texas A&M: 3 retuning on o-line
Ole Miss: 4 retuning on o-line
Alabama: 2 retuning on o-line
Miss State:4 retuning on o-line
LSU: 4 retuning on o-line
So Carolina: 4 retuning on o-line
Florida: 3 retuning on o-line
Missouri: 2 retuning on o-line
Vanderbilt: 3 retuning on o-line
Tennessee 4 retuning on o-line
Arkansas 2 retuning on o-line

Backup Quarterbacks
Several SEC schools are looking for backups at quarterback including Alabama. The Tide will enter spring drills with 7 quarterbacks in camp. Two year starter AJ McCarron will be the 'man' but finding a solid backup will be a priority for Saban and staff.
AJ McCarron, Sr. (211/314 for 2,933 yards, 30 TDs and 3 Ints) during 2012
Blake Sims, Jr. (5/10 for 77 yards, 187 yards rushing, 2 TDs) solid runner.
Phillip Ely, So. (3/4 for 42 yards, 1 TD) my guess is Ely transfers after spring.
Alex Morris, RS Fr. (made good progress during redshirt season...not highly recruited...from Texas)
Cooper Bateman, Fr. (4star recruit out of Utah...already enrolled in school)
Parker McLeod, Fr. (3star recruit out of Georgia...already enrolled in school)
Luke Del Rio, Fr. (chose to walkon...had scholarship offers from Ok St and several Pac 12 schools) wants to be a coach.
Saban on QBs: "The way opportunties go, it doesn't happen by seniority. You probably look at it like this...this guy has been here the longest, so he gets the best chance. Well, if he's been here the longest, he's already had the most chances. If he hasn't taken advantage of those opportunities, then somebody else has a turn at getting those chances."
True freshman Cooper Bateman will get a long look this spring.
Ole Miss looking for backup Quarterback
With starting QB Bo Wallace missing spring practice because of recent shoulder surgery, head coach Hugh Freeze is looking for a solid backup during spring drills. With only two scholarship QBs to work with (Sr. Barry Brunetti and Soph. Maikhail Miller), Freeze has been anything but pleased with their play so far. If either Brunetti or Miller can't win the backup role, Freeze has 4star recruits Ryan Buchanan and Devante Kincade to look forward to as they arrive this summer.
Wallace should be ready to go this fall and will have 4 O-line starters ready to join him. Ole Miss returns 18 starters and a top 10 recruiting class ready to join the team.

I didn't know Jack Del Rio's son walked on at Bama. Surprising.

Where would you put Driskel among the returning Qbs? I'd say he's 6th or 7th depending on how one views Mettenberger and Franklin.

Based on what I have seen in the past year and what I have heard in spring practice reports, I have Driskel as one of the two bottom ranked returning starters. I do not buy into the excuses about the lack of offensive line and receivers. I will gladly eat crow if he winds up being one of the top two QBs, but I do not see that happening.

Top 2 isn't going happen unless we installed the spread option- Murray,Manziel and McCarron are all legitimate all-american/ heisman candidates- if he can end the year top 5 in the SEC i'd be really impressed, breaking into the top 10 and at least being an average QB is my hope.

I agree. I hate to admit it, but JD has proven me wrong time and time again when I have defended him in sports discussions. Even if the new offense clicks, those other guys are that much better. Mettenberger might be the surprise stud if he takes direction from his new OC.

Unless you have a tank who can run like a Tebow or you get away with holding every other play, you should have two good QBs in a league like the SEC with so many good DLs. Having just one is pushing your luck.

Instead building an indoor practice facility our boosters should build a plush SEC officiating HQ in Jacksonville.

The fact that Luke Del Rio ever had one offer is laughable I played against him. He was God awful his stats were just inflated from the air 5 (unconventional offense he played in while he was in Jacksonville that is exclusively a passing offense). He's not good at all.
