2nd place is unlikely but he has a chance. He won't, however, sniff 2450.

Much like Calipari's Final Fours, Maxwell isn't in the official record books.

True. However, NCAA doesn't get to tell me what I remember. The Hawk scored some points. Camby was pretty good in the tourney. Calipari is actually a pretty successful coach which might be why Kentucky hired him. I am guessing they remembered those final 4s even though they might have not been in his resume.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Kenny - he is one of my all time favorites, and its possible I even teared up a bit when he went on his run today. He deserved that. But I for one saw also a lot of points scored by a Gainesville kid back in the 80s and I enjoyed everyone of them. On the court, he was a good one I won't forget, either. Surely not just because he isn't in the official pre-game notes.

I think Billy needs to get him to the free throw line early. Hitting those two free throws seemed to set him off. Kenny is such a quality person and is a Great Gator. Even when he is not shooting well he does everything else with such focus and intensity. I hope he goes ballistic in the NCAA tournament and wins a national championship. No one deserves it more! No matter what happens, Kenny will always be one of those players that means a lot to me and are remembered over the years. Somewhat like Ahmad Black for the football team. I will never forget him because of his class, hard work, leadership, and just being an overall wonderful human being. I feel as strongly about KB.

I'm proud Maxwell isn't in the record books. A real jerk of a human being. I remember being at one game, Gators down by one with 5 seconds left (I'm sitting about 10 rows up at half court where we bring the ball in and am guessing inbounds to VM and take it all the way in). The toss an easy inbounds (right at the junction of half-court line and the sideline)in to Maxwell, he immediately turns and throws up an airball with 4 seconds to go and we lose. The entire ODome was speechless.

Years later, Sloan tried to defend himself for leaving him on the team saying he always won every drill, every sprint, etc. at practice. BS! Then we got coaches with class like Spurrier and Donovan and that stuff ended.

Kenny is 10 times the person Maxwell was and just as good a basketball player.

I completely agree that many of Maxwell's life choices can't be defended. He was a kid acting like a kid, and later in life continued on that path. It was and is disappointing. But I recognize his record because I saw the balls go through the hoop.

As you implied above, a good coach can do wonders with some of these kids. I often wonder what might have been different for Vernon if he had a better support system than he did. I'll bet Billy with Vernon would have been pretty special.

Sorry for the Hawk talk. Kenny is a special gator, and I am far more proud of him as a Gator, truth be told. So my apologies for derailing the thread.
