yeah, I saw that last week.....pretty damn impressive.

what I was really amazed at was his end to end speed with the ball.

once he crossed half court he only took one more dribble to get to the hole

Dr. J was known for doing that. Only needing 1 dribble to get the hole at full speed.

SICK!

I had a chance to meet Bill Russell at the Jackie Robinson golf tournament in '96 - a true legend.

I shook hands with him following a speaking engagement 31 years ago and that man had the largest hands I've ever seen or heard of...like shaking hands with a catcher's mitt.

That was pretty amazing. He was still so far up in the air at the rim. His arm is bent, and he just laid it off the backboard.

Rebound, 5 dribbles and lay it in!!!

Think I'll try at the gym this week. Bet I'm closer to 8 dribbles.

CA, I was driving down Sunset Strip in - I think it was - 1969, and saw BR on the street, getting ready to get into - are you ready for this - the driver's side of a brand new Porcshe 911E or T, coupe.

He was about two times taller than the car, and I didn't look back to see if he actually could do it or not; I assume he could and did.

There was no mistaking who BR was, if you saw him in person. A gigantic guy.

I was on the way to Bill's Taco Stand at Hermosa.

Bill Russell is a really amazing fellow.

His mind is far above and beyond that of most humans, and that is a major reason why he was so astoundingly effective on a basketball court.

Its never been illegal to dunk in the NBA. It was for several years in college ball.
One of the sillier rules in the history of basketball.

Thanks for the clip! I can see clearly now why Red Auerbach decided to make drafting Russell his priority with the aim to build his team on Russell's revolutionary game-changing defensive abilities.

And, just imagine that Chamberlain was a better athlete than Russell and quite a bit bigger and taller

These guys were not the stiffs playing against bigger (but shorter ) stiffs some of the posters on this site seem to think (based on some of the posts in past threads). Russell and Chamberlain could have played and starred in today's game as well.

Russ was unequivocally, the greatest basketball player of all time. In college he won 60 games in a row, including back to back NCs. He followed that up with an Olympic Gold medal without a Dream Team around him.

When he came to the Celtics in 1957 they had never won anything, but Russell's presence made them immediate winners and it continued until Russ retired. He won 11 rings in 13 years, with 8 in a row, and the last two as player/coach. He was the first black head coach in any major sport.

Many of those championships came at the expense of Wilt.

He faced a winner take all game 22 times in his career and was 22-0.
If Jordan was so great, why did it take 6 years for his team to win a ring?!

Probably because if you weren't alive and and able to see it yourself it doesn't resonate in your mind the way those you see with your own eyes do. Kinda how there's a lot of HS and young college players who never truly saw Jordan play and find it difficult to imagine him being better than LeBron. I'm 37 and an avid basketball fan. I've always heard about the greatness of Russel but that video was first I've seen that made it set in what an athlete he was. That was also first time I've heard a lot of those facts outside of the 11 titles. I'm sure I have read about those facts before however it didn't "set-in" without seeing a clip like that.
