He frustrates you offensively sometimes,” said Backman, who praised his power numbers but noted he struck out too much. Den Dekker hit 17 home runs in both 2011 and 2012 but exceeded 150 strikeouts both seasons.
Backman said den Dekker seemed to overcompensate last year, taking too many strikes early in counts while trying to be selective.
But Backman and the Mets also point to a hopeful pattern. Though den Dekker batted just .235 after ascending to Class AA during the second half of the 2011 season, he made the necessary adjustments and batted .340 there during the first half of 2012.
