Default WTH is a Banking Board?

Currently watching the A&M-Tenn game and keep hearing Joe Dean refer the backboard as a banking board. Where did he get that from? I understand banking it in, but banking board is out there. Someone needs to get this guy up to date.

I heard that during one of our games this year as well. Not sure who the announcer was at the time.

It is Joe Dean Jr trying to be folksy and have a signature phrase like his father had. I think he needs to go back to the drawing board and find a different one than "banking board."

The Banking Board is a small, mysterious group of men that control the strings of international finance and subsequently all heads of state. They know who you are and what you say and think, and will not hesitate to...hold on a minute...someone's at the door...

Just because a phrase sounds really stupid does not stop an announcer from using it. I am sure Gene Deckerholf has been told many times it is a play clock and not a huddle clock. You can be out of the huddle and still get a delay of game penalty, so stop calling it a huddle clock.

Another reason Joe Dean (doesn't matter, Jr. or Sr.) annoy the hell out of me. Their stereotypical southern schtick gets old fast.

Yep, I did not care for Joe Dean and surprisingly to me his son is even more annoying.

I grew up on Joe Dean Sr. He was color man for the one SEC game we got to watch each week. Met Joe Dean at a UF game in Alligator Alley when I was a student and he was one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. He was sitting down on press row, getting ready to do the game and I went down and introduced myself. He was so kind - took the time to chat with a student just minutes before tipoff. Different era. I always got a kick out of Joe Dean, with his "banking board" and "string music" .

Joe Sr. was the "second fiddle" on some of the greatest LSU teams ever, supporting the legendary Bob Petit. He must have done those SEC games of the week for 30 years, until he became the AD at LSU and really did a good job of cleaning up the mess that was LSU athletics.

Joe Jr. is just carrying on the family tradition, keeping his father's memory alive, etc. Can't say he's my favorite color man, but hearing those terms takes me back, and he's certainly not the worst color man out there..

For you young whippersnappers -
Back in the early years of the last century when the goal was attached to a large square, usually wooden, but sometimes metal board, it was called a "bank board" or "banking board." The term evolved to a "back board" at some point. When I played in the 50's it was usually called a "back board" and glass was just beginning to be used in some of the more wealthy districts. Making a basket "off the glass" was a new experience. My h.s. didn't get glass boards until the 60's.
