I don't have a problem with the 3s. the problem is that the 3s don't look like they are coming from within the flow of the offensive design. Or perhaps that they are being forced a bit early.

You're right. It's not about the three being taken, it's about it being taken before exploring other options; At times in the game where we need to be smart, we look reckless, making quick decisions rather than thoughtful ones.
I've seen them happen in two different key situations -- one: we've had a lead, the other team is putting together a rally, we have a good defensive stand, get the rebound and the person dribbling the ball up the court pulls up from a foot or so behind the line and take a long shot, before anyone is even there to get a rebound. EW did that a lot, so does KB. I think that's a "I'm the leader of this team and I'd better do something because this sh*t is getting out of hand" decision.
Or, at the end of the game, when there's time on the clock, instead of working the offense, it's a "somebody's gotta take the shot and I guess it's me" mentality. Both times it's playing scared and putting more faith in yourself than in your teammates or coaches. I don't think it's a terrible mentality to have, because you want confident players, but I'd rather see the person handling the ball in those situations take a breath before they make a decision.
