Why many recruits string it out
It's the economy stupid... and the get it now, for free mentality that reflects the current entitlement society. Analyze the greater majority of recruits economic and cultural background...they fit the profile. Analyze the generational predisposition to ME first and the delusional riches of pro ball where single digit percentage of college players actually make it, and the picture becomes clear. OK, you liberal-left eggheads come get me.

In before the move....
I think it has very little to do with politics or socioeconomics or whatever, but I think it is just a sound policy. We are talking about four years of your life. Once you sign, if you hate the place, your coach can determine which schools you can transfer to.
I don't mind recruits visiting a ton of places and waiting until the last day to "string us out", but I do agree that not many recruits seem to understand the meaning of the word "commitment". Maybe verbal commitments should be binding so that someone can't back out of a verbal, I dunno, that's a question for the NCAA.

Um, why wouldn't they- they're making the most important decision they've made in their lives-- they have to balance a shot at the NFL however remote with the highest quality education they're prepared to get: if they were just looking from an education perspective they wouldn't consider Bama or LSU, or even Florida unless they couldn't get into one of the privates that are top tier non-Ivies- the Duke, Stanford and Northwesterns of the world- then they'd look at the big public powerhouses-- Cal and Michigan (Florida will be here in a decade or so if current trends continue), then would come us and Texas.
If you were a recruit and you were making a decision that could decide your professional future and does decide your educational path wouldn't you visit as many places as possible? I mean if you had job offers from say 30 companies would you just decide blindly or would you visit your top choices and weigh it out?

Very reasonable thinking. The maturity level you afford these youngsters is admirable.

Biggest decision of their young life. Not hard to understand their confusion. Many, many things to consider with no do overs. Imagine if it was your son...

Economics could play a factor. These kids get free vacations that they've never had. Plus, they don't call them slUTs in Knoxville for nothing and f$u has that local brothel (aka FAMU).
OTH, early committments is fairly new; it wasn't long ago that the vast majority of recruits didn't let it be known until they signed. Except of course for the ealry signing period that the SEC had. Kids could sign a SEC letter of intent in the fall, which was binding only bewteen SEC schools.

FIRST: EXILED ya gotta replace that pic if you want anything you wrote to be read. Theres just too many wonderful crannies to get lost in there.
That being said, if ANYONE can't figure out why a p-poor young'un, with exceptional talents that are possibly worth millions (or more) if the correct decisions are made, would delay decisions in order to extend receiving attention, consideration, and free stuff, from the entire planet? Well, I really don't even know how to comment. Why it just makes me write run-on sentences!

Crannies? Sigmund Freud approves.
This thread has everything. Starting with a blanket statement of the economy as the root of the recruiting phenomenon we know as recruiting, reservations and commitments. Then we moved on to the hardworking young ladies who take the recruits to the nuclear medicine facilities and linear accelerator they yearn to see. True patriots. Finally, the omnipresent HOW BIG IS YOUR JOHNSON? double entendre reference.
Then, like clockwork, we see logic and knowledge rear their ugly heads. Most young men are not from wealthy families and love the chance to see some places and have some good food. Heck, we all would. Decision making is extremely difficult for some.
All I would ask is like Jay-nard Bostwick. be a silent commit. Stick with your word. Let everyone else guess. That is on them.
