I might be returning to Gainesville (places to live?)
Okay I have never lived in Gainesville outside of my college years which in reality was a 5 year bender. I've never been an actual ACR, so where do Gainesville locals actually hang out? I'm just looking for an apartment as I'll probably be transferred to Jax or Tampa after a year. I'm 35 and single...okay thanks pub.

If you don't want to live around students I would stay away from the apartments off 35th St and the ones with kid appealing names like Cabana Beach. Reserve at Kanapaha is nice just off I-75 (West on Archer Road) for an older crowd.

Exactly my thoughts. I miss my college days but have no desire to attempt and relive them. I'll be looking for a place on Monday. Think ill look around 75. My college gf worked at the Millhopper Publix and that seemed like an old area. I was so ignorant, honestly never got to know the city outside of the campus, crappy student apts, midtown and downtown. I definitely regret it.

Where abouts will you be working? What sort of scene are you looking for? At your age and single I think downtown area is still the most interesting area, lots of people your age not just students. I would look in the duck pond area ( search for NE Blvd on google maps ). Obviously you are looking to rent, but are you specifically ruling out houses? You say you spent your time DT, midtown, and university and think you missed out on real gville but my friend that IS real Gainesville, that is where real locals your age without wives and kids hangs out, not haille, mill hopper, or kanapaha. Enjoy it while your young enough to. I would stay within the bounds of 34th st to the west, SW 16ave to the south, NE 9th st to the east, and NW 39th ave to the north. But it is only a suggestion.

All over, I'm a claims adjuster. So the location is all up to me.

I still enjoy the bar scene but I'm a bit past the part where I'm downing shooters and closing it down.

No I want your suggestion(s) it's why I started the thread. I like downtown Gainesville on gameday weekends but my fear is I'll be sifting through people 10+ years my junior if I frequent and /or live in the area. I don't want to be the old creepy dude. I'm single for the first time in 8 years so I'd like to frequent some decent happy hours/bars where I can meet some females in my range. I'm just looking for a one bedroom apt. I don't see any reason for me to rent a house.

I know plenty of people in there 30s and 40s living near downtown (w/in about 5-6 blocks in any direction of the corner of main St. and University Ave), perhaps they just look like students sometimes though, people in their 30s don't look old . If that's too young/hip for you, you could try the shorter NE between 8th Ave and 23rd Ave, between Main St. and NE 7th St. The closer to 23rd avenue you get, the more "get off my lawn" it becomes.

Heh, nah I'm not a curmudgeon by any means. I have no problem with the younger crowd or scene. I'd rather be around that group over the divorced and bitter crew. My only worry is being the old guy.

UFNut is spot on.
I always felt like the DT Gville scene was more your 30 something crowd. Midtown was more the undergrad scene.

Another area I liked a lot during my later years in gainesville (lived there till I was 28), was up right along NW 6th St., between 8th Ave and around 30th Ave. I lived around the corner of 6th and 23rd, being able to walk to Wards & Albertsons (which I think is gone now?) was cool. I also loved going to Hogans. Its a quick car ride or bike ride to either midtown or downtown, and if you have a few too many, it's not an overly long walk . It is pretty quiet out that way too, nice combo of close to downtown, but still quiet.
I've always hated the westerly sprawl out near the mall, and have never lived out there. So naturally I'm not going to suggest that sort of area. If it weren't just you, I think there are a lot of NW areas that are super nice off 8th/16th Ave between 13th st. and 43rd St, but it's mostly houses, but I love how they retained most of the trees/plants.
Another area that has a lot of apartments that is quiet and not super crowded with college students is NW 23rd Blvd, out behind the old movie theater by godfathers pizza & taco bell.
I honestly get what you are saying about not being around the 18 year old crowd though. The last place I lived was about a block from sorority row, and I felt like I was surrounded by a bunch of middle schoolers. One night I was trying to sleep before an exam (this was a Tuesday or Wednesday if I remember right), and I was awakened to the sound of drunk people playing Red Rover in the parking lot at 3am....no I'm not kidding...Red Rover.
