2. January, 2009: Meyer returns, promises to delegate and take better care of his health

3. Meyer learns his chest pain is due to "esophageal spasms"

4. UF has a relatively dismal season

5. December, 2010: Meyer again quits, to spend more time with his family

6. Early 2011, Meyer is asked to leave UF as an adviser due to his association with ESPN and potential NCAA issues.

Here's what some have speculated and bandied about as fact:

1a. Meyer made this whole thing up.
1b. This was caused by Nick Saban!
1c. He didn't make it up, but he made it seem worse than it was.

2a. Meyer only did this in name, to give Foley a chance to find a coach and not ruin recruiting.
2b. Meyer would come back almost as a figurehead.

3a. This is just codeword for anxiety, which is embarrassing to admit to.

4a. This is due to Meyer no longer "having it," or alternately:
4b. This is due to Meyer not really doing anything, and Steve Addazzio and crew not being up to snuff or:
4c. This is due to Meyer not letting Addazzio just coach and meddling too much, or:
4d. Finally Meyer's crappy team management methods collapsed and the lockerroom environment couldn't take Meyer's system of the best players getting the best treatment anymore.

5a. He's LYING!!!!

6a. ESPN??! Thought he wanted to spend more time with his family??!!

I'm not huge on spending time in the speculative column, because I simply do not know if all or any of it is true. But so much of it has become canon at this point that it's impossible to separate the real timeline from the one angry Gator fans have conflated with the speculation.
You forgot to add these Dec 2010 events

Dec. 7, 2010
The U.S. attorney’s office notifies Ohio State officials that it had discovered some Ohio State memorabilia during a raid on Rife’s home and/or the tattoo parlor and asks if the items were stolen. A day later, the athletic department is informed. The list of dozens of items released later estimates the value at $12,000 to $15,000.

Dec. 9, 2010
Tressel says publicly this is the first time he hears about his players’ involvement with Rife, when told by school officials. He makes no mention of his email exchanges with Cicero or Sarniak or any knowledge he has of the matter.

Dec. 16, 2010
OSU interviews the six players found to be involved with Rife (Pryor, tailback Daniel Herron, Posey, offensive lineman Mike Adams, defensive lineman Solomon Thomas and defensive back Jordan Whiting). Smith later thanks the players for their conduct in these interviews, “because they were honest [and] forthright.”

Dec. 19, 2010
OSU turns in a self-report to the NCAA and declares the six players ineligible.

Dec. 22, 2010
The NCAA notifies Ohio State of five-game suspensions for five players and one game for Whiting. All must also pay to charity the equivalent of the money and services they received. In a twist, however, the NCAA allows the players to participate in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4, 2011; their suspensions begin with the 2011 season.

Dec. 23, 2010
Smith and Tressel hold a news conference to announce the sanctions. Tressel says the players must have known what they were doing was a violation of NCAA rules: “We all have a little sensor within us, ‘Well, I’m not sure if I should be doing this.’ ”

Things that make you go Hmmm..

People always say things like this but history tell s us that is doesn't always happen that way. Matt Rolin's whole family went to South Carolina he was even committed to South Carolina and now he is a Gator. Tim is on record saying he almost went to Bama and doesn't think he could play for SOS.

Tebow was going to Florida no matter what. Shula was the only reason he was wavering, had nothing to do with anyone at UF convincing him. Although there has been no UF coach who would have been better at getting the most out of his skillset.

Like I said South Carolina fans would say the same thing about Matt Rolin. I dont even think CWM would recruit Tebow.

Has anyone here read Tebow's book? It doesn't sound like it.

Tebow was so unsure of his decision between Uf and Bama that he was wavering 30 minutes before his announcement. He wrote a speech but left blank the school choice.

He finally went with Florida and called Shula right before the ceremony. Per Tebow, Shula was so classy that Tebow THEN had 2nd thoughts about his decision to go to UF. He called Meyer to see how he would react and the call dropped.

If TT was that unsure, I don't see why WE would be sure he was coming here. TT has said there is no way he could have played for Spurrier so I guess it depends who was coaching us in 2005.

That's fine, they aren't the same person and really has nothing to do with what we're talking about. Tebow did not choose UF because he liked Urban over Shula. And yes CWM would have recruited the hell out of him just like Meyer did Brantley.

WTF? I'm going to assume you're joking. Right? Muschamp would have gone out of his way to recruit Tebow.

Why wouldn't he?...Because he wasn't a drop back "pro style" QB? Our current QB Driskel isn't a drop back passer and he beat out the QB that just transferred who was a drop back more pro style passer.

I think he'd probably go after him but not too hard- Boom is a lot more open to dual threat guys than SOS was- there's a reason he wanted Grier, I think we might see more designed QB runs/ options in the future. Spurrier on the other hand- look as I was trying point out with the not offering Frazier thing- Steve is stubborn to a fault, its both his genius and his downfall a lot of the time- we all remember the games where'd we'd keep throwing the same play or type of play even when it wasn't working properly because SOS knew it should work, and it often would. He wouldn't have gone out of his way to get a QB who didn't fit his idea of what a QB was, at least not at the time Tim was getting offers.

This is the dumbest thing I've seen you post. Every single coach in America would want Tebow on their team.

I'm not sure I agree- I think he was the greatest SEC QB ever and is on the short lists for the greatest college players of all-time, but he wouldn't have been the Tebow we remember in a pro style system like we currently use or say in SOS's Fun and Gun-- the leadership still would have been there but who runs for 750 yards a year quarterbacking a Nick Saban team?

Players fit into certain roles- to use two of the other all-time great college QBs- flip the guys leading their respective teams in the 1995 Fiesta Bowl- does Danny lead Nebraska to 3 straight title games, does Frazier tear it up in the Swamp?

That maybe so, I agree he would have excelled in Meyer's system probably better than any other. But to think CWM wouldn't have recruited him...c'mon.

I don't know I mean I would think he probably would but look at this upcoming year- we only offered Grier, even though there are other QBs rated similarly or above him, whose to say CWM makes Tim his guy.

Tebow was a cult figure in northeast Florida, a top 3 QB, showed strong interest for years, and wanted to be a Gator from day 1. Muschamp would have gladly taken him, just like Urban did with JB.
I guess I missed the part where Shula was running the spread option. Are we now to believe Meyer was so brilliant only he would have offered a 5 star QB who is an hour up the road?
