McFly, calorie-cutting works for damn near everyone ... short-term.
Also, you seriously need to get over your lazy-ass assumption that obese people are basically lazy.
Typically, morbidly obese clients of mine have been: (A) hard-working people who were (B) on their feet as much as thinner clients and (C) had tried myriad diet and fitness strategies in the past and (D) were game to try another.
Aside: the 'laziest' client I ever worked with, by general activity diagnostic, was a relatively young, 5-4 142 lb. woman who wanted to lose twenty pounds. Her 77 year-old mother registered more general activity than she did.

This is categorically, scientifically untrue.
If you eat at maintenance you will stay the same weight. If you're maintenance puts you 50 lbs overweight, you will stay 50 lbs overweight.
Willpower is specifically what succumbs to what people lazily refer to as "biological safeguards."
There is no starvation mode.

You're likely confusing categories. No, metabolism doesn't just drop to zero, per the usual complaint. But it certainly does slow down. Not only does REE decrease, but we now know that TEE decreases.
And this is one reason why many find it so difficult to lose weight in the first place, never mind maintaining it.
Have you found the proverbial Holy Grail of weight-loss maintenance ? You may stand to make millions!
And in nay case, why are you recommending weight-loss in the first place. We know it doesn't decrease mortality risk. And indeed it may increase mortality risk.

Metabolism slows as your body shrinks. This, like all of weight control, is at the mercy of thermodynamics. But that isn't the issue.
If you hit 200 lbs at a caloric consumption level of 2000 calories a day and you stick at 2000 calories a day then - barring illness - you will be 200 lbs next year.

Again, with the correlation versus causation.

In other words, the holy grail is "don't give in to your desire to eat the whole cheesecake."
Like I said, you can't sell it and, frankly, people wouldn't buy it anyway.

You're still mired in category confusion. Damn near everyone can lose weight short-term. Almost no one can keep it off for any appreciable time. Why are you sitting on the sidelines ? Get in there and show them how it's done. Here's your chance to make a difference!
Ironically, 'fat is dangerous' is borne of 'correlation = causation.'

Eating the whole cheesecake is what dieters do.
Er, why do we have them dieting since their fat isn't killing them ?

Because they start eating more. If they don't do that, they don't gain weight.

Well I never said fat is dangerous, so ...

Actually, it's exactly a version of that.
I used to work in a high stress (at certain times of year) job with 3 thin girls in my department. When things would get crazy, they would say things like, "I was so busy, I forgot to eat!" This is not a thought that has ever crossed my mind. To me, "too busy" meant a quick run through the Mickey D's drive thru.
Skinny habits vs. fat habits.

You may be onto something, Einstein. In a sense, we Americans are, unwittingly, participants in the largest lab study in human history. Give 315-million participants free access to food ... and you get people in all shapes and sizes.
Now, here's what might get you your first Nobel Prize:
Take away their food! Sit back and watch all that weight come off!
End the end, there will be no fat people. Of course, there won't be anyone at a healthy weight either. But at least we won't have to look at fat people.

Yes, but why are they dieting ? Isn't it because they think it might work ? Maybe they think they can muster the willpower at long last ?

If you believe that literally nobody can maintain their weight long-term, then I'm not sure what to tell you.
Scientifically speaking, it is 100% possible (and practically simple) to do it. When you remove the variable (choice), it is inevitable. When you let that back in, things often go awry. That's choice. That's willpower.
