Vanderbilt has never had a sustained period of success in their modern-day football program. You look at some of the relatively good coaches they've had: Brown, DiNardo, Johnson. It's never happened. Why will Franklin be successful and remain at VU? Is this another one of your "I believe" things?

What hurts Vandy more than anything else is their small fan base. They will have to win the SEC to get to a bowl outside of the state of Tennessee because as I said earlier the Florida bowls will not take them. That reality will have to eventually settle in on Franklin and the players he recruits and Franklin will leave for greener pastures. The fact that I am even arguing about being better than Vandy shows how far we have fallen and that they have improved a little.

Also, to add to this they had some very good defenses the first 3 years under Widenhofer. When we had Peyton Manning and some of our best ever teams from '95-'97, we beat them by scores of 12-7, 14-7 and 17-10. This is not the first time that Vandy has shown signs of improvement but it never lasts more than a few years. We beat them 38-0 in '98.

Again let's visit history before making assumptions about the future. Army, Navy and Harvard were all at one time major football powers that at that time no one would've thought wouldn't stay that way or that wouldn't at least bounce back after a few down years. UT could fall to the wayside in that fashion even if their stadium holds 100k plus. Heck if they keep dropping attendance averages by 10k a year they may tear the thing down.
Miami was a small school with little/no fanbase till a few brash and rebellious coaches started "coaching up" that South Florida talent. Now Vandy doesn't have a recruiting base like South Florida but just because they're a small fanbase doesnt mean a thing if they start winning a lot. Heck Miami's fanbase probably has never travelled as well as Vandy's or at least just as much as each other's.
Now in no way do I ever think UT will fall off the face of the CFB map nor do I think Vandy will ever have anywhere the success as Miami. But let's not write them off because we think things should always be a certain way and never change. That's a pretty ignorant way to go about things.

Vanderbilt will probably never unabashedly cheat the way da U has over the years. Absent cheating in 'Caine swag fashion, I don't see that level of success for VU. But then again, you never know.

That is all true but my point was that when recruits realize that success at Vandy (even in the unlikely event of a 9-3 season) still means just another home game for them against a bad ACC team on a cold day in Nashville then that will put the brakes on recruiting. I was born in Old Hickory and have a lot family in and around Nashville. Vandy has few fans and that is not something they can overcome in one generation. Their own city supports the team they consider their biggest rival by a wide margin... Imagine if you played a home game against FSU and the Swamp was overrun with Nole fans. That is Vandy's reality.

Well, I've responded to posts by RayGator, jagervol, dank1313 and you on this thread. But somehow I'm following you? Please get back on your meds, buddy!
But in case you don't get back on your meds, remember this bit of advice: just because you're paranoid doesn't mean everybody's not out to get you!

Franklin will get an unexpected upset here or there, but Vandy just doesn't have what it takes to seriously compete for an SEC title unless all of the other traditional SEC powers were having down years.
That said, I think Franklin is a fine coach.

Gray - I took the liberty of editing your quote to fit with this thread.

Down years happen at every school..even Bama, Texas, Okla, Ohio St. Mich, and UF. Just UT's time. This new coach will fetch them a much higher class next year and years to come.
Vols will be back.

They've pretty much been having a down decade. Recruiting and on the field when you compare it to Fulmers glory days.

They are in some serious trouble. There is not enough talent in their area to sustain a good program and they don't play in the Big12 so they cant go into Texas anymore. They are trying to get into metro Atlanta but they are last on the totem pole.

Butch Jones only had two months to work with and the only real disappointment of kids we had a legitimate chance with and didn't get were Vonn Bell, EJ Levenberry and Derrick Green. If we had just landed Bell the class outlook would have been much different. Dooley quit recruiting after the Miss St loss in early October and we lost ground with those players but still I don't think it is quite as gloom and doom as you guys think. DE Jason Carr and WR Marquez North and even the QB Dobbs should start right away. We will see what Jones can do with a full year - this is an unusually strong year for in state Tenn talent. I know Muschamp has wants Hurd and Kelly badly and has already visited their schools to see them...and we won't lose to Vandy at home. Geez.

Getting Vonn Bell wouldn't have changed the entire complexion of your class. Would have helped, but marginally. North is a difference maker. Carr and Dobbs…maybe.
And I'll be waiting with popcorn ready if and when Vandy beats UT at home next year. Oh nelly that'll be a bloodbath on the Vol Radio Network.
