It all depends on how you define extreme.

They win if they go "extreme" on economic issues. They lose if they go "extreme" on social issues.

Middle America sympathizes far more with economic freedom than social religious control.

The further away from the middle you go with wings, the less voters you find.

So going toward either, lose more voters than you gain. If it weren't for gerrymandering, the party would be in a whole lot worse shape than its in, due to winger's thinking they are the base of the party.
