My eyes were bigger than my stomach on the suspension trainer I bought. The novelty wore off real quick. Good thing I didn't shell out for the much more expensive TRX system.
I do plan to hold onto my adjustable dumbbells. But I have to say that the one indispensable item I own is probably the cheapest, my doorway pullup apparatus.

You can get an Iron Gym at Wal-Mart for under $20. They're tested to 300 lbs. In over two year's time my door frame is still intact. Only thing is the foam grips tear after a few months. But I just taped them over.

I saw the Golds one without the straps for $18 i think. I've only seen that Iron Gym one in Academy Sports though, i know walmart usually sells a lot of Golds Gym stuff.
Your not sold on the straps? I've never used them, but need to ab work as thats my worst area of fitness. I run like crazy, and do some light weight work, but abs and love handles are lacking in development. Gotta look for every edge.

Well, that's fine. But remember that pullups variations, properly performed, work the abs HARD. Further, the abs are like any other muscle group in that they do not require hundreds of reps. Finally, with the straps you squander the opportunity to turn leg lifts into a total upper-body exercise. Without the straps you work grip and forearms, biceps and lats.

I've been wanting a pull up bar, but I keep looking at my door frame and the thin crappy molding held in by pin sized nails and think, "no way in hell that's gonna work". Who knows, but just can't get myself to trust it, and don't want to have to repair my door frame if (when) it fails.

Cheap doorway pull up bar, works great. Splurged for a good bench. Straight bar, curl bar, 350 lbs, and Bowflex dumbbells. They're a little bulky, but replaced a floor full of hex dumbbells, so I recommend them.
A Smith Machine would be sweet though.

I actually have an outdoor gym.
My equipment includes a shovel, a pick, a digging bar, an axe, a chainsaw, rakes (with and without teeth), and wheelbarrows.
I actually switched to this method when I found out I would not only be in better shape using this equipment, but that there was money in doing it. Well, at least for ten and a half months out of the year, anyway.

I think I know what you're saying. And I think you're reminding us the Italians don't do cardio.

You'll love it! And hell, just hanging on it will build muscle. I usually begin my workouts with a dead-hang. Gets me amped up for the harder work to come.

1. Hex Dumbbells starting at 5lbs, and every 5lbs up to 60.
2. Weight Bench
3 pull up bar with multiple handles.
4. flooring similar to gym.
5. Yoga Matt.
6. Road bike. Not sure if that qualifies.
7. Resistance bands.
