Implying? It's documented fact the early institutionalized church was in bed with what was left of the Roman empire. Acquiring and consolidating power was the name of the game. The writings the church canonized supported the incipient theological views of the time. These views contrasted and denied the previous prevailing worship of the Caesars and their self proclaimed divinity with Jesus. The Caesars were dead. Jesus was alive. Long live Jesus.
We've hashed out on other threads "false notions that Christians resultantly believe." It boils down to incorrectly taking biblical accounts as literal and factual that were written, and should be understood spiritually, in a metaphorical sense.

It's one thing to point to later cultural accretions, along with the eventual, lamentable missteps of the early church, and quite another to assert the embellishment and fabrication of scripture. What is the basis of such a claim other than the possibility that you don't like some of the scriptures ?

Yeah, I'm sure there are. People commit suicide for a wide variety of reasons, but I'm not going to blame Chris Culliver's comments over them.
|
Never said it was a huge problem. I said most things in life aren't a big deal. Doesn't mean we shouldn't talk about it or that it's not wrong, mean, inconsiderate, etc.
I'm not going to blame Culliver's comments directly, but its the attitude and many comments over time that cause the environment.

I think the terms misinterpretation or perhaps misunderstood are more accurate than "embellishment" or "fabrication" in this instance.

Yeah I have no problem with the discourse. I'd like to encourage it instead of faking outrage, sympathy and sadness over comments. That way we could discuss it without one side having to shut up and issue an insincere apology. Meanwhle the other tells themselves well done so they can be reassured what a great person they are.

The environment of suicide? If you're saying bullying or neglect from a family because of homosexuality I'm right on board. I certainly don't agree with that kind of reaction.

Hey, that was really clever. The HSA talking points, propaganda hot line would probably like to hear from you on that one.
Unless . . . that is where you got it.

Oh, I grant that. But a problem arises when we, for instance, attribute things like the resurrection to misinterpretation.

Oh, I don't think so. It becomes a problem only when it is allowed to be one. But this tangent will take this thread further off topic so it might better be *cough* resurrected *cough* on the preterist thread if you care to take it there.

People who kill themselves do so not because there is a problem with society but because there is a problem with themselves. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to help them, but let's not blame external forces when the culprit is clearly internal. It's irrational to try to change a society to "be nice" when the solution lies in helping the individual better deal with stress.

Gotcha, although it needs to be pointed out that you're hardly able to say anything these days. Somebody, somewhere needs to call the public's bluff and refuse to apologize. Sheeple are boring.

I agree that the "PC"-ness of today's society is a bit out of control. With that being said, I don't think it's ridiculous to think that a gay person might be offended by his comments. I don't think this would have been as much of an issue were he on the roster of, say, the Steelers...

Sure, but we can hardly help but offend others even when we go out of our way not to risk offense. Here's the deal: one's convictions, if true, unavoidably have implications for others. It can't be helped. It's hard and unyielding.

What do we mean by "offended?" That word is so overused or at least misused. Is it really that bad to be offended?
