Default Game 2 Canes - Question

According to different depth charts UF will be bringing back 33 of 44 on the 2 deep chart on offense and defense and UM will be bringing back 41 of 43 on the 2 deep chart on offense and defense. In your opinion, will our replacements be better than their experienced players?

I don't think your question can be answered in the abstract, it depends on the player. More experience doesn't automatically mean better player. Different players peak at different points. A more experienced mediocre player who's peaked is still a mediocre player.

Miami got waxed by anyone with a pulse last year...including a Notre Dame team that utterly humiliated them based on solid defense and a strong rushing game.

Our rushing game shouldn't dip much at all given the fact our OL will be bigger and arguably more talented...and there's no shortage of talented and capable RBs on our roster who can pick up yards. If Driskel improves his passing game in the offseason, then our offense will get noticeably better--and that was a big hindrance this past year.

Our defense will lose a step after losing Elam, Bostic, and Floyd...but I'm definitely confident in Muschamp's defensive abilities--and his ability to coach up defensive talent (which we've been stocking up on in abundance over the last few recruiting classes).

That's some optimistic spin on the rosters because both teams actually lost more than that. You can dig up 33 UF players that have played at various times, but to say UF only lost 11 players in their 2 deep is wrong (Brissett, Gilly, Wilson, Robey,Nixon,Reed, Hines,Hammond, Sturgis, McCray, Okine, Floyd, Hunter, Bostic, Jenkins,Saunders, Elam, Evans).
The same is true of the UM roster although they truly didn't lose a whole lot....but they did lose their best QB and I think Linder was the heart of their OL and he is gone.

To the original question....I think the offense may take a bit of a hit with Coley replacing Fisch as OC. I would guess they will try and pound Duke Johnson at our defense which lost a lot of its physicality with Bostic/Floyd/Hunter/Elam and Evans gone. But our corners should be able to make them one dimensional and allow us to load up the box. Edge UF
Their defense should be better on maurity alone, but they still lack the kind of talent they are used to. UF's OL and QB play should be much better....again edge UF
UM gets the home field but you can bet it will be a split crowd with heavy UF attendance. Early season rivalry games are always scary, but if UF plays its game it will be a win IMO.

UF could run for 300 yards in that game. It won't much matter if that happens.

I know fans want Jeff to throw for 300 yards, but Miami's run D was SO bad, I wouldn't be surprised if he is 15 of 18 for 175 yards and 2 TDs. I think we run the ball 50x in that game, control the entire game and win 24-13.

Miami got blown out last year by K-St and ND in Chicago. I think it would be a mistake to judge next year's Canes based on those two games.

In addition, if you watched UF's Sugar Bowl game against Louisville, you might be wise to give the Canes at least a chance in this game because the best team doesn't always win especially if the underdog gets a break or creates a break early.

Their D-line was beyond atrocious last season. Unless they've significantly improved next year, I would expect Jones and Taylor or whoever plays RB against them to put up some good numbers.

Sure.

Just like you probably expected to out muscle Louisville.

Miami's DL was tanking it. Nothing to play for. No bowl, no nothing, things went bad at K-St early and they laid down like a bunch of chumps. Same thing against ND. They quit, not just the DL.

But next year is a new year and it will be week two and if Miami can get a little help or scores early they will give you a run for your money very much like the game played in 08 or 09 when you had Tebow in G-Ville and it was a close game until the 4th Qtr when Demps blocked a Miami punt for an easy 6 or 2 (might have been a safety, can't remem).

Up until that point, Miami, a huge underdog, was giving you guys a tough game.

Miami will be in a frenzy ready to rip our heads off. I bet you their entire off-season will be focused on this game. We better be ready to match their intensity. Don't judge the 2013 canes by their 2012 results. Sept 7 will be a war.

Miami should be a solid team next year. If Driskel only has marginal improvement then Canes could really give us a scare. If he shows major improvement we should walk over them. The 'less than 100 yards passing in 3 straight games' Driskel isn't going to get it done.

Stewart Mandel's take on the 2013 canes:

Quote:
After showing signs of life last season (at least on offense), Miami returns 19 starters and a number of impressive young backups (running back Duke Johnson, cornerback Tracy Howard) for 2013. This offseason, Al Golden has hired two well-respected coaches and recruiters in Mario Cristobal and James Coley, and the university saw the NCAA botch its investigation. Is it unreasonable to think that Miami is back?
-- Joe, Miami
Miami has gone 7-6, 6-6 and 7-5 over the past three seasons. It is not "back" by any stretch. But I'm not sure The U could have asked for a better offseason to date. Golden resisted overtures from Wisconsin and Tennessee. The 'Canes lost no underclassmen to the draft (though there weren't many feasible possibilities). Cristobal and Coley are both seasoned South Florida recruiters (though it's impossible to say how Coley, formerly Florida State's offensive coordinator, will fare in his first gig as a major-conference play-caller), and yes, there was that whole development in the Nevin Shapiro case. It's unclear what the NCAA is going to do once it gets done investigating its investigators, but it seems highly unlikely it will still drop the hammer given its public admission of misconduct in the matter.
And hey, Miami's really good at basketball now, too. Ask Duke.
Given the massive amount of attrition Golden dealt with after his first year, the program was already ahead of schedule simply by getting better last season. Quarterback Stephen Morris significantly improved. Golden's impressive 2012 recruiting class contributed immediately. Players like Johnson, Howard and safety Deon Bush figure to have an even bigger impact in 2013. Remember, the 'Canes would have played for the ACC championship last year had the school not banned itself from the postseason. Miami may well be favored in its division in the coming season. If it actually wins the conference -- something it hasn't done in nine seasons -- then you can start using the word "back."

The game Sept. 7th will be a focal point for Miami and their fanbase to establish they are back similar to their games against Ohio State and Penn State in 1999. That year, they beat OSU soundly in the meadowlands and gave #2 penn state all they could handle in the Orange Bowl.

I hope so, Plus our offensive line will be better than last year's line. So that's an upgrade right there. The receivers will be better than last years - no way to go but up. Driskel will improve. The RB's will be as good as last year, hopefully. And the defense should be outstanding.

I'll take our 2013 team over their last year's team any day of the week.

Miami next year is in a similar position as our team this past season: coming off a terrible season and returning a lot of starters.

To think we'll win this game easily is homerism at it's finest. We struggled vs Bowling Green, Missouri, Louisiana Lafayette and others we should have beaten handily.

This game sets up for Miami like the Sugar Bowl set up for Louisville: plenty of time to prepare and a lot more to prove than UF.

We also lost a lot of key contributors to the 2012 team...and this game is early. Our new starters need to be ready.

With that, I would hope we improve over last season (especially on the offensive side of the ball) and go there ready to win.

We played our best games, save one, against our toughest competition last year. This is the "U" we're playing, so we will be up for this game unlike those small school games we slept through last year. But I agree, it will be a close game.
