Default Some Random Thursday post SoCar Thoughts

Here are a few random thoughts of mine, some that do not fit in any particular thread:

1. Boynton had one of the best steals in the first half last night that I have ever seen in basketball. He took a couple of steps like he was following his guy across the key and doubled back to take the ball from the ball handler before the ball handler knew what was going on. It was a very clever move that you probably can not get away with all the time.

2. The 2012-13 UF basketball team is seemingly turning into the 1995 and 1996 UF football teams. Like those football teams, this basketball team knows how to get an opponent down and not let them up. There is a cumulative effect of this in that if you get an opponent down early they expect it to snowball on you. The opponent's first goal is not to get blown out.

3. Boy is Michael Frazier a good rebounder. His shooting came up on another thread, but he has Yeguete like nose for the ball to go along with a very nice shot.

4. Ken Pomeroy's model predicted UF to beat SoCar by 83 to 51. So after UF won by 39, he retweeted this sarcastic e-mail:

Quote:

Waiting for an email like this. RT @vegaswatch: Ugh, your SC-UF prediction tonight was obviously wrong. Why do you hate the Gators so much?
5. From statsheet.com UF has covered the spread for the last 8. That is every game since Air Force. Also last night UF's lead was 100% safe starting at 14:22 left in the game.

I'm super-impressed by Frazier. He's every bit the shooter he was made out to be. Plus, he really has no holes in any other aspect of his game. I really hope this kid stays for a few more years!

That's the kind of score you would only expect to find on the women's side where the gaps between the top teams and the lesser teams is apparently much greater than in the men's game...normally.

Frazier seems to be about as dead-eye as it gets from 3-point land when he gets a wide open look and has time to line up the shot.

I also loved Boynton's pass-back to Rosario for the wide open layup on the 2-man break they had. Boynton could have reasonably taken the shot himself off the pass from Rosario (and I would have guessed there was a 95%+ probability that he would take that shot), but the quick pass back to Rosario provided the perfect solution to that fast-break scenario

Bill Jams made up the little formula used for this. On this page midway down on the left they have the running calculation.

http://statsheet.com/mcb/games/2013/...-36-florida-75

UF led 41 to 10 at the 17:22 mark and the lead was 68.9% safe.

We actually led 38-10 at 18:42, thus making our lead 100% safe. Seeing as how they scored 36 points for the game we could have gone the last 18:42 without scoring and still won! Amazing!

But, I think we would have clamped down on defense if that (not scoring in the last 18:42) had happened. We probably didn't have to score in the last 25 minutes to win

This formula is for ex-ante not ex-post analysis. At 18:42 we did not know how many points they would score.

Agreed. Maybe he makes the jump with some improvement after his Jr. year, but he is a 4 year player, possibly 3 year starter.

IMO, Frazier spent his senior year under the radar due to transferring from Plant to Montverde. Playing with Kasey Hill actually took the attention and responsibility off of Frazier, which is why he fell a bit in the rankings after his senior year.

No matter. Billy offered early and this guy is showing he is a very, very solid player even as a freshman. He's always been a hell of a shooter. Who knew he would rebound so well from the guard position?

Loved Billy's comment to Rosario at halftime telling him he was responsible for 6 of the 10 points SC had because of the tech, a turnover and a backdoor he allowed......hard to believe he was responsible for 60% of their offense. However, I hope they got the missed bunnies out of their system. I couldn't believe how well they played, but how many points they left on the board from two feet away from the basket.......but loved the effort and attitude. The freshmen are getting more and more playing time and Graham and Kurtz are definitely crowd favorites. Watching warm ups, Walker has a very nice touch. Billy is benefitting from being able to get them in for some time, but I'm sure that soon the only guys coming off the bench will be Yeguette, Prather and Frazier. That's a dadgum good rotation of 8 players.

Frazier has really impressed me. We knew he was a good shooter, but the kid has been a phenomenal space and position rebounder and he is also improving defensively with the additional court time. One thing I noticed last night was how much more confident he was in our rotations and switches and how well he communicated. The kid is going to be a huge part of the team over the next few seasons.

We are extremely talented with our top 8 guys rotating in and out. However, with the way we are getting leads, the added dimension of getting valuable playing time for the others will benefit us if we have injuries or foul issues in games come tournament time. Billy D has a group of guys who are playing unselfish basketball and are committed to excellence on both sides of the court. Our offensive firepower is nothing to sneeze at and our defensive prowess is the best I have ever witnessed coming from a Gator team.

I really enjoyed watching the guys off the bench play the last several minutes last night, the skills were not up to the starters but I thought they gave great effort.

Well, personally Insti, I think that these "random thoughts" fit into just about any thread, albeit, perhaps not all of them in the same thread.

Interesting comparison with the 1995 & 1996 Gator football teams, although that is not entirely correct, because when the Gators played Vandy in Nashville, in 1996, they lost 3 Olinemen, and were nervously watching a large lead disappear in the second half on the way to a final 27-21 victory.

Frazier has been a surprise. Actually, I was not really expecting any of this year's Frosh to get much playing time given the returning team. Of course, then, I expected Larson to put in 5-10 minutes at forward, allowing Yeguete to move over to the 3 more.

If I have time, I am going to go back to some of our big games this year and post some of our most impressive leads. 55-15 from last night will be on it.

Well, this is not really the place for the mythical Vandy game UF "almost lost" discussion, but let me just say that the final score was 28 to 21 so Vandy was at most driving to tie probably and that I did not say the 1995 and 1996 football teams or the 2012-13 basketball team did not lose or have close games, I merely said they seem to know how to get an opponent down and keep them down. Vandy came back in that football game and Zona came back and beat this basketball team making my description slightly less apt but the comparison slightly more apt in my mind.
