While this joke has already been made, is it necessarily true?
The Jags paid $4MM for their 2 QBs and the Jets paid 5.5MM for a starter and a rare wildcat QB that couldn't really be easily implemented into their offense. Pushing McCarron up to backup and adding Russel for pennies on the dollar makes a lot of sense.

Maybe, maybe not.
The reality is if you are going to have Tim Tebow on your roster, you better be prepared to run a Tebow-friendly offense, which means 3 QBs that can run it. That's the case whether Tebow's the starter, the #2 or the #3.
Shoehorning him into a traditional offense is a recipe for disaster, as would be shoehorning someone like Sanchez into something that worked to the talents of a improvising, mobile QB.
I'd say the Jets were stupid for signing Tebow more than not playing him. If they signed him, adapted a spreadish offense and then didn't play him, that'd be a different story.

PFT’s Mike Florio has been advised that the Jets have no interest in adding Russell to their current group of quarterbacks. It says plenty about that group of quarterbacks that a suggestion of adding Russell doesn’t sound completely out of whack, but it’s not surprising to learn that the Jets’ search might focus on players who have actually been playing football for the last three years.

Tebow ran the Orton (in Denver) pass friendly offense the last three games of his rookie year just fine. I see no need for teams to change that.

Go back and watch that tape. Denver had implemented a bunch of the spread even then. As bad as it was for Tebow in Denver, they at least had a small subset offense for him.

The pro-spread is now the norm in the NFL, so I see Tebow in any pro-spread, or spread-read offense doing okay. All that might be needed is a tweak or two, but nothing whole-sale.

Let's just say that the Tebow experiment with the Jets is over. He (and us) just need to move on to the next opportunity. And I have no doubt that he will sign with someone and he will be glad to get away from that mess.

I don't agree with it, but I also wouldn't agree with shoehorning Tebow into an offense where he won't excel.

The problem with Tebow (although increasingly less so), is that his skills demand a specific offense, one that does not gel with a Sanchez or a Jamarcus Russell. So either way you have one square peg on the depth chart.
|
Well I realize that and I should've been more clear. Russell hasn't played in how many years? My point is there are plenty of backups or even draft picks they could sign that have been playing. This is another PR stunt to try and keep the sorry ass jets in the spotlight.
Actually now that I think about it, maybe they deserve each other.

Why don't you compare w/l records.

How does adding a bust of a QB who hasn't played make sense?

Because it doesn't pertain to the statement I was responding to, that Russell couldn't throw an accurate pass...and thus not worthy of another shot in the NFL. Tebow has an even worse problem with accuracy but lots of folks seem to think he deserves yet another shot.

How does paying someone $2MM to sit on the bench make sense?
At least this is cheaper.

I think what some people here may not realize is that chances are that nobody, including the Jets, is going to sign Russell with the expectation of him competing for the starting role.
More than likely, he'll be invited to camp like an unsigned free agent to show what he can do. If they like what they see, that team or maybe another team that likes what they see will sign him.
He's a low risk, potentially high reward guy. Why not give him a chance?

Exactly. Worst case you say "no thanks, tubby."
Best case, you've got a dirt cheap backup.

Well it's no secret his passing needs to improve but his accuracy % is a little flawed. No excuses but his receivers didn't exactly help him in that regard.

It doesn't and I never said it did. That still doesn't make the Russell move smart. Since when is a half a million dollar investment on a bust of a player worth taking? He's already proven he can't hack it. As I stated its just another PR stunt.

My point is, if you're going to have someone who's just taking up a roster spot and won't play anyway, might as well :
1. Pay much, much less for him
and
2. At least have his skillset better match the offense
