Default UF tops SEC in rebounding percentage

Quote:
Currently, Florida is first in the nation with an adjusted defense efficiency of 81, according to KenPom.com.

Helping the Gators lead the nation defensively is Wilbekin, who was named SEC Player of the Week on Monday. Wilbekin is averaging 1.8 steals per game this season, which ranks 10th in the SEC.

Collectively, Florida is averaging 8.8 steals and 3.2 blocks per game in conference play. The Gators also have a 55.7 rebounding percentage, which ranks first in the SEC and seventh in the nation.

Such things, to a large extent, reflect your competition.

Overall, the Gators competition has been pretty decent, however, 4 of their 6 SEC opponents are toward the bottom of the Conference Standings.

I have did not find percentage quickly, but Missouri was is third in the country in rebounds per game and LSU and Zona are pretty good too. [Heck Missouri led the country in rebounds per game until the O'Dome game.]

Okay, I've followed basketball closely for decades and I have a question: what the hell is "rebounding percentage"? I swear, this is first time I've ever heard of such a stat. There's total rebounds, rebound margin, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, individual rebounds, team rebounds...somebody must have just now made this one up.

It would be rebounds divided by chances. So it would be something like rebounds/[(opponents missed shots) + (UF missed shots)] Missed shots are probably adjusted for missed live ball free throws. Thus a good shooting team like UF particularly UF 2007 would not be penalized in this stat for not having as many opportunities as teams that miss more shots.

BTW, I found a site with this statistic. It shows UF as second nationally:

I'm guessing rebounds made per missed shots, both offensive and defensive combined. Not sure how else a team would get 55% and it would be top ten in the nation.

edit: Insti beat me to it.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/glossary.html

All advanced statistics defined.

Looking at combined rebounding percentages is misleading and not very elucidative.

We're 26th in offensive rebounding % and defensive as well, go figure. Offensive is effort based and defensive is team based and depends on positioning. Offensive can be low based on team philosophy as well. We grab 37.1% of our misses and 74.9% of the other team's misses.

Our defensive rebounding is up from last year about 2.5%, which continues a trend over the last 5 years (we've had a small team for the previous 4 years explaining our low numbers), but our offensive rebounding numbers are way up, 6% in total value or an increase of over 16% from 31.6. It's interesting, because last year was an aberration. Our offensive % has been over 35% for those same years are defensive numbers were down.

Unreal when this was supposed to be our glaring weakness going into the season. We have two rotation players over 6'8.

"The Gators also have a 55.7 rebounding percentage, which ranks first in the SEC and seventh in the nation. "

The Gators outrebounded Mississippi State 40-17. The SEC has some real cupcakes. This may boost the Gator stats but hurt them come tournament time when they play against better quality teams. It's difficult to hone your skills against soft competition. Billy has a tough job motivating the team to play at a high standard even though it may not be required to beat the current caliber of competition.
