Greater? Bama winning 3 of 4 FB titles or Gators winning 2 FB + 2 BB in 3 years?
The Bill King show on Serius/XM had a great question.
Which accomplishment is greater:
1. Bama winning 3 FB titles in 4 years?
or
2. Gators winning 2 FM and 2 BB titles in 3 years?
King made it clear that both accomplishments define "greatness". So, one doesn't diminish the other.
But, he seemed to be leaning toward the Gators' accomplishment. He pointed out that Tom Osbourne won 3 FB titles in 4 years in the 90's. He said that what the Gators did is harder. What other team has won a title in both FB and BB in the same year? He said that no one else may do what the Gators did for another 200 years.
I agree. The Gators' accomplish may never be matched.

2 and 2 I think. Not just being a homer but thats impressive as hell. Also, we came close to repeating as well if it werent for Dunlap.... (runs and hides)

Depends on how you quantify "greater." If you don't care about sports other than basketball, the value of our accomplishment is diminished.
Amazingly we were 1 game from matching Bama's feat AND having the two basketball titles.

IMO, repeating in BB is much, MUCH harder than repeating in FB--even though FB is difficult enough. What UF did with BB and having 2 in 3 for FB....an accomplishment we will probably never see again by anyone.
While indeed both are remarkable--nod goes to Florida in this one.

When you consider that Florida and Michigan State are the only two schools in history to have multiple national titles in both sports, it has be Florida's accomplishment. To do something in a three year span that only two schools have accomplished in recorded history is mind-boggling.

Throw in a Heisman in the middle too. That ups the degree of difficulty a little I would think.

Ours.
Bama was aided by the medias love affair with the SEC in recent years. They could have easily missed the title game both this year and last if they had their run five years ago. No way there would have been an all sec nc then.

2009...would have put UF in dominate status...
Oh, and if Baseball would have brought home the title from Omaha in 2005, that would have been '05 Baseball, '06 Basketball & Football, '07 Basketball, '08 Football & '09 Football if not for the SEC let down. That is a streak right there.

And one of Michigan State's football titles was a split title. We're the only school with multiple consensus titles in both sports, and all three of our football titles are consensus. Sparty claims 6 football titles, but only 2 of them involve AP and UPI, a consensus title in 1952 and a UPI title in 1965.

I would think that texas, oklahoma and ohio state are at this time the only other programs capable of winning both. any others I'm missing?

We all know how hard it is to have a major sports team (football, basketball, baseball) at the national championship level in the NCAA.
Having two there at the same time, for two out of three years, is much harder than having one at that level.

Michigan, perhaps.
But, the odds against any of those teams actually winning titles in both sports are extremely long. One in a million.
But, yes, they have a chance!

Bama is a missed Oklahoma State FG (vs Iowa St) and 2 missed Oregon FGs (vs Stanford) from not even playing for their last two titles ...

as long as saban is at alabama, they will be contending for the title every year---he's built a machine up there that will be hard to stop. Hopefully, he goes to the nfl soon.
