Rest In Peace Stan The Man
I just learned two things I never knew before...
Daytona Beach had a significant impact on Stan Musial and two major events which shaped his life: a career-altering injury and his marriage.
In the summer of 1940, Musial's baseball career was irreversibly altered. While playing for the Daytona Beach Islanders, Musial dived for a line drive in the sandy outfield and hurt his pitching shoulder. He was 18-5 with a 2.62 ERA for the Islanders in 1940, but he pitched only once thereafter.
Musial batted .311 with 70 RBIs in 405 at-bats that year with the Islanders, a farm club of the St. Louis Cardinals; by 1941 Musial was with the parent Cardinals and by 1943 he was the National League MVP.
During the 1940 season, Musial and his wife Lil married at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Daytona Beach on May 25.
