Instead of subsidizing the whole system until it crumbles, we should make intelligent choices about what is and is not going to be on the public nickel and how best to control costs going forward. I agree with your implication that discretionary care has been a private sector success story. The problem is thinking that the same paradigm applies where our hands are tied by ethics.
